HHS Speech & Debate team qualifies for national tourney

Huron High School Speech, Debate, and Oral Interp team members attended the NSDA qualifying tournament at Sioux Falls Jefferson high school on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

Huron had two Duo Interp teams and one Program Oral Interp (POI) that made it to the final round. The duo of Lily Halter and Henry Van Scharrel placed third and are first alternates to the national tournament, and the team of Izzy Schafer and Landon Pomerico placed fourth and are second alternates. Lily Halter, a senior, placed fourth in POI and is the second alternate.

Also competing but not making it to finals were Green Ta Bah and Mylie Byrd in Duo, Keara Gabriel in Humorous, Natalie Kinsley in Informative speech, James Wheeler in Extemporaneous speaking, and Gracie Warren in LD debate and Informative speech. Alternates may have an opportunity to travel to the national tournament if the first and second place finishers cannot go.

The NSDA tournament is in Des Moines, Iowa in June. It will be the 100th year celebration of the National Speech and Debate Association.

Coach Ben Halbkat said, We are very proud of the students progress throughout the season leading up to quals. They showed dedication and passion competing against the toughest in the state. Coach Laura Iverson said, The interp performers ended the year well despite setback with illness. It is exciting that they are all setting goals for next year and looking for new pieces already so that they can do well next year.

This tournament ends the season for the interpers. The debaters and speakers will end the season with State Debate in Brookings March 8-8 and Student Congress March 14.
