Huron’s Gross earns shot at Class A state title

RAPID CITY Moses Gross of Huron earned a shot at a second straight and third overall state championship during the second day of the Class A State Wrestling Tournament on Friday.

Gross recorded 21-6 technical fall against Owen Ward for Aberdeen Central at the 5:43 mark of their 150-pound match in the semifinals to earn a berth in the championship match.

Gross, who improved to 24-0, will Michael Roob of Vermillion, who is 31-6, for the state championship today.

Other Heartland wrestlers competing for a championship today include Wessington Springs/Woonsocket/Wolsey-Wessington 132-pound sophomore Jacksen Carter who used a 6-2 decision over Gavin Bruan of Kimball/White Lake/Plankinton to move into the championship where hell face Tray Weiss of Custer.

Kellan Hurd won a 4-1 decision for Miller/Highmore-Harrold over Ryken Orel of Winner to earn a championship bid Saturday against Johnny Lenz of Kimball/White Lake/Plankinton at the 144-pound weight in Class B.

WS/W/WWs Holden Havlik continued a strong state tournament run, defeating Karter Headrick of Flandreau by technical fall at the 4:37 mark to earn a title bout in the 215-pound Class B match with Jensen Fitch of Philip.
