Letter – McEnelly 2-28-25

To the editor:

Donald Trump promised to reduce grocery prices on day one of his administration. Today, I went shopping and looked around. Eggs are $7.50 per dozen; 81% lean hamburger – $6.00/lb; chuck roast 14.50/lb. For the high end consumers, New York Strip steak is $21.00 and Rib Eye $27.00/lb. Wednesday, President Trumps Secretary of Agriculture released his plan to bring down egg prices.

  1. Develop a way to isolated chickens from outside contamination from wild birds. Ever look at a large poultry production unit? They are already isolated.
  2. Pay for the replacement of layers. This is current policy.
  3. Repeal all those onerous regulations hamstringing production. Hmmm such as candling for embryos, checking for salmonella and e-coli contamination?
  4. Importing 70 to 100 million eggs over the next two months. America consumes 3 times that amount daily!
  5. Investing in developing a vaccine. It has been some time since we lost turkeys to bird flu because a vaccine was developed at South Dakota State University. Do you really think the government, poultry industry, and SDSU are resting on their laurels?

How ya doin, Mr. President?

Our federal employees, who make up the civil service, are under attack. Many adjectives (mostly unkind) are used to describe them. President Trump often refers to them as The Deep State. Many citizens feel our bureaucracy too large, over-paid and inefficient.

A brief look: The US Civil Service is composed of two million people. Our population is about 350 million. While two million seems a lot, thats only 0.6 percent of our population. G15 is the highest pay level in the Civil Service because it is the level for bureau supervisors and individuals with special skills. G15 base pay is $110,000 to $163,000. To be expanded
