No. 2-ranked Lynx flex muscles against Huron girls

HURON The Huron Tigers finished their week playing the top two teams in the state, facing the second-ranked Brandon Valley Lynx to close the season Friday at Huron Arena, but the Lynx were in control throughout on a 60-36 victory.

The Tigers were able to get on the board first as Hylton Heinz pulled up for a short jumper. On Brandon Valleys first possession, Gracie Salter got her own rebound and put it up and in.

Salter would connect on a floater on the Lynxs next possession, but Chloe Carr had a strong post move to answer for the Tigers and make it 4-4.

Salter would then get a pair of free throws and then cut backdoor for a layup. Alyvia Padgett got a bucket for Brandon Valley to quickly make it 10-4 Lynx.

Allison Janes got two buckets for Huron, first on a hard take through the Lynx defense and then on a floater that she banked in to close within 10-8.

Brandon Valley answered with a quick fast break layup for Amanda Lease and Reese Condon came off the bench and immediately knocked down a three. She then got a steal and fed Padget who was fouled and sank both shots to quickly push the lead out to 17-8.

Heinz would attack the hoop and get a bucket, but Padgett was able to hit a floater at the quarter buzzer to end the first period up 19-10.

Padgett would get a bucket to open the second quarter to give the Lynx their first double-digit lead of the game, 21-10, but Carr and Aly Davis would get back-to-back buckets to close the lead to 21-14.

The Lynx defense then kicked into full gear, leading to a 15-0 run, with Padgett scoring seven and Salter getting four during the run.

Heinz broke the run with a three-point shot, but Padgett immediately answered with a three of her own. Salter got a putback to send the teams to the locker rooms with Brandon Valley up 41-17.

The Lynx opened the second half with strong defense, getting steals on the first two Huron possessions, resulting in a layup for Padgett and a move for Salter underneath to make it 45-17.

Heinz put in a bucket off an inbounds pass, but the Huron offense struggled to break through the Brandon Valley defense. Padget would get a steal and layup to make it 49-19, starting the running clock the rest of the game. Both teams struggled some at the free throw line in the latter part of the third quarter, but a bucket by Davis at the end of the third quarter to cut the lead to 54-25.

Carr got the first points of the fourth quarter, but Madison Geiver immediately answered for the Lynx with a post move of her own. The Lynx pulled their starters at the 5:52 mark.

Tiger senior Madison Jurgens did hit a three just after the Lynx starters were pulled, but Brandon Valley closed out the game with a 60-36 victory.

Brandon Valley closes the regular season at 18-2 behind 24 points from Alyvia Padgett and 16 points from Gracie Salter. Salter also hauled in five rebounds.

The Tigers fall to 7-13. Heinz led the way with 13 points and Carr added eight points.

Abby Harrington led the Tigers with four rebounds.

Huron coach Kody Kopfmann stated that Fridays play was notably down compared to Tuesday.

I didnt think tonight we were in attack mode like we were Tuesday night, Kopfmann observed. We were back on our heels. It was the same zone but we sat back on it rather than attacking.

Kopfmann continued, We knew what was coming. We did some good things in the second half, but by then the game was out of reach. Now we need to wait for where we head next Friday.

The Tigers will be on the road for the SoDak 16 next Friday.

The Lynx won the sophomore game 54-53 on a pair of free throws with two seconds left in the game. The Lynx also took the JV game, 39-30.

The Tigers have two seniors on the team, Madison Jurgens and Allison Janes. Kopfmann spoke very highly of his seniors.

My two boys absolutely love them, he said. Those two have worked so hard just to be here. I have no doubt they will be great at whatever they do in life.
