RAPID CITY Seniors Holden Havlik of Wessington Springs/Woonsocket/Wolsey-Wessington and Kellan Hurd of Miller/Highmore-Harrold closed out their high school career on top during the Class B State Wrestling Tournament, which concluded Saturday at the Monument.
Havlik recorded a 9-3 decision against Jensen Fitch of Philip/Kadoka Area/Wall to claim the state championship at 215 pounds. He finished his senior season with a record of 33-3.
Hurd recorded a pin at the 1:24 mark of the championship match against Johnny Lenz of Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes, to win the title at 144 pounds. He closes his seniors season with 46-4 record.
Canton claimed the Class B team championship with 189 points, while Winner was second at 140. Rounding out the top five were Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes at 121, Philip/Kadoka Area/Wall at 113 and Parkston at 865.
Miller/Highmore-Harrold was 10th at 64.5. Redfield was 13th at 49.5, followed by Wessington Springs/Woonsocket/Wolsey-Wessington at 48.5 and Kingsbury County at 43.5.
Sophomore Jacksen Carter also reached the title match at 132 for Wessington Springs/Woonsocket/Wolsey-Wessington. He was edged 9-8 by Tray Weiss of Custer in the championship match.
Carter finished the year 41-2 for the Warhawks.
Junior Talon Ping was third for Miller/Highmore-Harrold at 126. He closed the tournament with a 8-3 decision against Trystan Traupel of McCook Central/Montrose to finish the season at 48-4.
Sophomore Jordan Schafer was fifth for Miller/Highmore-Harrold at 138, while freshman Chase Hurd was seventh at 132.
Clark/Willow Lake at five placers in the tournament, led by freshman Cade Gaikowski, who was third at 106. He needed a victory in an ultimate tiebreaker against Cannin Snyder of Philip/Kadoka Area/Wall to claim the spot after the match ended in a 3-3 deadlock.
Also placing at the state tournament for the Cylcones were freshman Kaden Wookey (fourth, 113); junior Cooper Pommer (fifth, 120); senior Josh Kannegieter (fifth, 190) and senior Elliot Bratland (seventh, 165).
Senior Gannon Gilligan was fourth for Kingsbury County at 132.
Sophomore Cody Zell was seventh for the Knights at 126, while senior Kaleb Johnson at 165 and junior Breyten Johnson at 215 were eighth.
Senior Camden Murray was fourth at 215 for Redfield. He closes his high school career with a 47-5 record.
Junior Maddon Odland was fifth at 106 for the Pheasants, while junior Conner Zens was sixth at 138 and senior Dylan Murray was seventh at 190.
Senior Jimmy Burma of Sunshine Bible Academy capped his career with a fifth-place finish at 215. He finished the season at 32-13.
