School Notes 3-3-25

HHS ESL classes
HILL General Math is the high school math class for English learners who are new to the country. Currently, students in this class are studying about money. They can identify the names and values of U.S. coins and calculate the value of a group of coins and bills.

They will also simulate a restaurant visit: choosing menu items, calculating a total bill and making change.

ESL Emerging A is starting a chapter called Around the House. Students will learn vocabulary for household items and read a passage about a family that is packing before a move. All students in the class can relate to moving, so they will discuss and journal about these experiences.

ESL Developing students are beginning to read Enriques Journey, a book about a teenage boys journey from Honduras to the United States to be reunited with his mother.

This book highlights the complex reasons why people migrate. Students can compare and contrast Enriques experiences with their own. They will learn new vocabulary words to accompany each chapter and write in journals to reflect on what they read.
