Blackhawks earn trip to Class B tourney

MITCHELL The Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Blackhawks earned their 20th victory of the season and earned a trip to the State B tournament with a 45-43 victory over the Corsica-Stickney Jaguars, but it wasnt easy.

The Jaguars, led by sophomore guard Braylee Bordewyk, stifled Blackhawks leading scorer Liz Boschee throughout the first half and hit timely shots, including a deep shot at the end of a shot clock by Bordewyk and a turn-around heave from behind the three-point arc by Sophie DeLange as the first half buzzer sounded to take a six-point lead into the break.

The Blackhawks came out strong in the third quarter, led by Alexa Goertz, and pulled out to as much as a seven-point lead, but the Jaguars would come back and regain the lead. However, Boschee was able to get going down the stretch, and the Blackhawks did enough to avenge a 44-43 loss to the Jaguars in December.

The Blackhawks move to 20-3 behind 17 points from Goertz and 12 points, all on 3-pointers, by Addison Bartholow. Boschee chipped in eight points, seven rebounds, and five steals.

Kaylie Robinson led the Blackhawks with nine rebounds and also ripped away five steals.

Bordewyk finished with a game-high 18 for the Jaguars, who finish the year 15-7.

DeLange added 10 points and Sydney Spaans chipped in eight while also contributing heavily on the defensive side of the ball inside.

The Blackhawks will open the State B tourney as the sixth seed, facing third-seeded Lyman in the final game of the opening round Thursday night at Huron Arena.
