HURON Saturday wasnt just about crowning a champion at the South Dakota Class B Girls State Basketball Tournament at Huron Arena. A few major awards were handed out Saturday evening at halftime of the championship game and after the completion of the title game.
Spirit of Six – Sanborn Central/Woonsocket
The Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Blackhawks cheerleaders won the Spirit of Six award, named in honor of six Rapid City cheerleaders who lost their lives in a plane crash after the 1968 basketball tournament. Squads are judged based on crowd control, energy, and positive attitude throughout the tournament.
Spirit of Su – Althea Gust
Centerville senior guard Althea Gust was chosen as the winner of the Spirit of Su Award. The award honors the memory of SuAnne Big Crow, an elite basketball player for Pine Ridge who tragically passed away in 1989 on her way to the South Dakota Miss Basketball presentation in Sioux Falls. Saturday would have been her 51st birthday.
Gust, who scored 31 points and dished out nine assists during the tournament as the Tornadoes 5-foot-10 floor general, was recognized for her basketball skill as well as her academic achievement and community involvement.
