To the editor:

A couple weekends ago, Huron hosted the State B girls basketball tournament, which had been scheduled to come here for two years. We knew it; the only thing that wasnt known was which eight teams would make the trek to Huron.

I attended the games on Thursday and Friday along with crowds who came to one of the best venues in the state to play basketball. I heard parents praise the Arena and how great the facility and atmosphere is in Huron. Thanks go to the school for putting in the upgraded lighting and scoreboards.

I am a motorcycle nut, so my Saturday was with MX racing at the DEX, a facility that is going to bring many events to Huron.

Thats where it went bad for some who made reservations in Huron last December when the four-race schedule was announced, barring any inclement weather They were told by a local motel that they couldnt stay despite having reservations. They were told they werent basketball people and that police said they couldnt stay (which was a lie).

The motel finally gave in and gave them a key card. They brought their belongings from the DEX only to find that their rooms had been sold again for at least $355 a night. They wouldnt leave, so the motel put them up in an employee store room for the night.

My question is – should the Chamber and city go all out to get events here, and the people who come get treated that way? I get supply and demand, but most of these small State B basketball towns probably dont have larger-paying jobs, and the public is gouged that much and people are treated unfairly.

I thought we were the Fair City; we should treat people as such. There are often going to be events happening at the same time on the same weekend because thats when it has to happen. Lets be the fair city and keep attracting outside interests.
