SC/W’s Boschee named Player of the Year in Class B

HURON For her role in helping to lead Sanborn Central/Woonsocket to a berth in the championship game at the Class B State Girls Basketball Tournament, junior Liz Boschee was selected as the Class B Player of the Year by the South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association.

Boschee was one of three area basketball players named to the Class B all-state team, which was also selected by the SDBCA. Junior Hazel Luethmers of De Smet was named to the second team, while Alexa Goertz of Sanborn Central/Woonsocket received honorable mention.

Boschee, a 6-foot post player, averaged 20.3 points per game this season for the Lady Blackhawks, who finished as the Class B runner-up with a 22-4 record. She also averaged 5.7 rebounds and had 77 steals this season.

Liz had a great season and really stepped up her overall game this year, Sanborn Central/Woonsocket coach Rob Baruth said. That all started in the off season when she made a commitment to herself and our team to get better.

She really put in the time to get better, he said. Once the season started, you could see her improve everyday.

Also playing a huge role in Boschees success this season was the other players on the floor with her, according to Baruth.

Liz, Alexa and Kaylie (Robinson) made a pretty good group to build around, he said. Liz will be the first to acknowledge that a lot of her success is due in part to having great teammates.

Joining Boschee on the Class B first team were junior Mak Scott of Lyman, senior Madala Hanson of St. Marys, senior Althea Gust of Centerville, senior Emma Marshall of Centerville and junior Jaelyn Huntimore of Arlington.

Luethmers is one of two juniors selected on the second team. She averaged 21.6 points per game this season for the Lady Bulldogs, while snagging 7.2 rebounds per game and recorded 87 steals this season.

Hazel has the ability to score many different ways and play every position, which makes her a tough player to guard, De Smet coach Brendon Pitts said. We saw multiple different types of defenses designed to slow her down throughout the year and she still managed to put up impressive numbers.

Aside from being our leading scorer, Hazel also led our team in rebounds, steals and blocks, he said. As the year progressed, Hazel became a big threat in transition. She has the ability to positively impact the game and make a play every time she steps on the floor.

Also named to the second team were freshman Izzie Eide of Centerville, junior Bynlee Landis of Colman-Egan, freshman Reagan ONeill of Bennett County, sophomore Berkley Ziebart of Parkston and eighth-grader Peyson ONeill of Bennett County.

Making up the third team are senior Bailey Verhulst of Harding County, sophomore Addison Heinje of Wilmot, senior Bella Williams of Kadoka Area, junior Marissa Storm of Ethan, sophomore Jacy Wolf of Chester and senior Payge Bakker of Sully Buttes.

Goertz received honorable mention in Class B for the second straight season. The 5-9 senior averaged 12.3 points per game this season for Sanborn Central/Woonoscket , while having 3.6 rebounds per game at 48 steals this season.

Alexa is such a great competitor and leader. She really stepped up in the big game on both ends of the floor, Baruth said. She has put in countless hours getting better everyday. She is such a good role model for our younger kids, too.

Goertz will be continuing her basketball career at the collegiate level, playing for Dordt College.

Also receiving honorable mention were junior Mataya Gouws of Deubrook Area, senior Ella Pollreisz of Ethan, sophomore Braylee Bordewyk of Corsica-Stickney, xophomore Rylee Peterson of Freeman and sophomore Amree Vander Vorst of North Central.
