HMS Music
In the general music classes, we have been learning all sorts of different things. The 6th and 7thgraders have been learning about different genres of music, working in groups to create music, and giving rhythm performances for the class. The 8thgraders have been learning the basics of guitar and end the class by having a solo performance of a well-known folk tune as well as a holiday jingle classic.
We had 23 students that went to Brookings on March 13 where they performed with 100 other students at Festival of Young Voices. It has been fun getting to know the new 6thgrade group and getting to know the new students who signed up in seventhand eighthgrade. All the groups have been working very hard since January to put on a great concert this spring. We are all looking forward to our concert at Huron High School on April 14at 7 p.m.

This year in classroom counseling we continued learning about the brain. Second and third grade students have been learning all about the brain and how it helps us understand our feelings! Using fun animal comparisons, students met the guard dog (amygdala), which helps protect us and alerts us to danger; the memory elephant (hippocampus), which holds important memories; and the wise owl (prefrontal cortex), which helps us think things through and make good choices. Theyve learned that feelings come from whats happening around us, to us, or even just from the thoughts in our heads. These lessons have helped students build awareness of their emotions and practice ways to regulate them in safe and respectful ways at school.
I had the joy of working with second grade during the first semester and third grade during the second, and Ill be visiting each classroom one more time for our exciting Brain Escape Room review! Students will complete fun challenges to show what theyve learned and earn a small prize its always a highlight of the year, and Im so proud of the growth Ive seen in all of them!

I am excited to share an update on the enriching learning experiences happening in the Gateway to Certified Nursing Assisting (CNA) class and Introduction to Emergency Medical Services (EMS) class at our high school.
In the EMSclass, students have been immersed in the study of human anatomy. Through interactive lessons and hands-on activities, students are delving into the intricacies of the human body, gaining an understanding of its structure and function. Utilizing the Anatomage Table, students have the opportunity to work collaboratively in groups, utilizing cutting-edge technology to reinforce and expand their knowledge of human anatomy.Looking ahead, EMSstudents will be delving into medical terminology and reviewing the bedside skills learned earlier this school year. This will provide them with a solid foundation as they prepare for future career opportunities in the health care field.
Meanwhile, in the CNA class, the students have been actively developing their skills and gaining valuable hands-on experience. Over the past few weeks, they have been practicing essential CNA tasks such as measuring vital signs, assisting with patient mobility, and perfecting their communication techniques with patients and healthcare professionals. In addition, students have been learning proper infection control procedures and mastering personal care skills, including bathing, dressing, and feeding residents.
Both classes will also continue with career exploration activitiesproviding students with valuable insights into potential career pathways in the healthcare industry.
I am proud of the dedication and enthusiasm demonstrated by our students in both the CNA and EMS classes, and I am confident that they will continue to excel as they pursue their academic and professional goals.
Thank you for the opportunity to share this update with the community.

HHS Library
The Huron High School Library is a busy place! Each day, students visit the library for various reasons. The library is a place where they can work on homework, group projects, research, do makerspace activities, play chess and checkers, participate in seasonal bookmark contests, take a minute to regroup and, of course, check out books and read!
We also have two study hall periods in the library, numerous clubs that meet in the library during SRB time, and classes like Modern Writing, Language Arts and Geography that utilize the library. We continue to add books in a variety of formats to our library collection and discard outdated materials. It is a never-ending process. We also hold a monthly book club with the public library.
Mary Olson and I facilitate the book club, and anyone is welcome to join! If you or your student(s) would like more information on anything library related, please have them stop by the library or you can email me at [email protected]. The library is open from 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. each day.
