Huron Middle School plans Science Fair

HURON Huron School Board members heard information Monday night about the Huron Middle School Science Fair, which will feature 40 projects, along with an Art Expo and Culture Fair on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at HMS.

This is the second year well have an art show during the Science Fair, said Lyndi Hudson, organizer. Its grown since last year. This year well have 25 original pieces. We want to showcase some of our kids talents.

The Science Fair will present medals and cash to first, second and third place winners, and a Best in Show will be chosen at the Art Expo. For the Culture Fair, 18 groups are working on different countries to showcase traditions and holidays.

Akina Decker and Taylor Stahly gave a report on after school clubs and professional development opportunities.

Elizabeth Raml gave a presentation on the Women in Science Conference for seventh and eighth grade girls held March 11 on the Northern State University campus in Aberdeen. Raml was joined by several young women who had attended the conference the past two years.

This was the third year Huron Middle School participated in the event.

Karla Sawvell gave a report on Taste It Tuesdays, a new program at the middle school where new menu options are introduced on the last Tuesday of each month. Selected exploratory students were chosen to sample and taste the new options.

The best way to know if theyll like food served is to try it, Sawvell said. A favorite of mine was micro-greens we did kale, radish and turnip greens. These are young seedlings of vegetables and herbs. Those first tiny leaves have the most packed flavor.

We also had the end products those plants grow into kale, radishes and turnips, she said. We asked if they could taste the similarity between them. We got interesting comments, like it tastes like grass.

Sawvell said she is excited to utilize the new hydroponic grow system in place at the middle school.

We are going to grow lettuce varieties for the summer feeding program, she said. It takes 25 to 30 days, were hoping to get two rounds of plantings for summer feeding. We can use it to grow produce for salad bars this fall.

Chalie Sah, a sophomore at Huron High School, is secretary of the International Culture Club that was started last fall. So far theyve sponsored three projects a food sale during conferences where they made $500 in two hours, handing out goodie bags of candy for Valentines Day, and their most recent project, a fashion show held at the high school featuring students in traditional dress.

The club has more than 80 members that attend. Since this is our first year were trying new things, Sah said. Its nice to help others see the diversity in our community and schools.

Supt. Kraig Steinhoff told the Board that the Huron School District will be partnering with Lake Area Tech in Watertown and the Huron airport to launch an aviation program for high school students.

Starting next spring we will be teaching unmanned aerial aircraft, drones, Steinhoff said. That class will be online with some in person classes. In 2026 we want to offer private ground school. Well pay for 20 seats for that class and will partner with Wild Air.

Were excited we have permission from the Department of Education to do so, he said. Were excited that is happening and the airport is excited about it.

The Board approved a grant request by Jolene Konechne for $5,000 from United Way to address unserved children in a preschool program.

Steinhoff congratulated several HOSA (Future Health Care Workers) who qualified for nationals in Nashville, Tenn. Seniors Heather Escobar-Reyes and Josi Ptak placed second n the EMT Team Event, senior Mackenzie Hershman placed first in the Family Medicine Physicians Event, senior Win Ni earned first n the Nursing Assisting Event, senior Hser Day Say earned second in the Nursing Assisting Event and senior Ichiro Umenmiya earned second in the Pathophysiology Event. Additionally, the top runners up for HOSA Nationals include senior Blue Law Shee in the Clinical Nursing Event, junior Ismari Lopez-Mendez in the Patient Care Tech Event, and senior Paw Kler Moos in the Human Growth and Development.

Junior Hylton Heinz was congratulated for setting a new school record in the javelin at 119-feet, 4-inches at the Huron Invite on April 11.

Senior Moses Gross was named S.D. Recipient of the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award presented by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

School Principals Day will be May 1, Lunch Hero Day is May 2, School Nurses Day is May 7 and Teacher Appreciation Week will be celebrated May 5-9.
The Board also approved three new hires and six resignations.

Following an executive session, a leave of absence request for Say Htoo, a para educator at the middle school, was denied.
