Brookings takes pair of games against Tigers

BROOKINGS The Huron Tigers baseball dropped a pair of games Thursday to the Brookings Bobcats in Brookings.

The Huron bats struggled to string together baserunners in the opening game, falling 3-1.

Jack Pederson opened the game on the mound, going 3 1/3 innings, allowing one run on one hit and four walks while striking out one. Oakley Anderson finished out the game with 2 2/3 innings, allowing two unearned runs on three hits and striking out one.

The Tigers had just six baserunners in the game. Davis Chase was the lone Tiger to reach base twice, with a pair of singles. Logan Leyendecker and Trace Wenz each had a stolen base.

Huron was in another tight game in the nightcap before a huge six-run fifth inning blew open the game, leading to an 11-1 Brookings victory.

Nolan Stahly made the start for Huron, going 4 2/3 innings, allowing eight runs on nine hits and a walk, striking out two. Leyendecker came in relief and got the final two outs before Brookings walked off with a run-rule victory in the sixth inning. He went two-thirds of an inning, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks, striking out one.

Wenz led off the Tiger lineup with three singles and a stolen base, but he struggled to get his behind him as no other Tiger reached base twice.
Leyendecker also had a stolen base.

The Tigers, now 1-11, face Jefferson in Sioux Falls today.

Pierre takes two from Tigers
PIERRE After rain delayed the game from Monday to Tuesday, the Pierre Governors showed no ill effects from the delay, taking a 10-0 and 3-2 pair of games from the Huron Tigers on Tuesday in Pierre.

The Govs came out of the gate strong, putting up six runs in the first inning and four in the second as they took advantage of control issues for Huron starting pitcher Davis Chase.

Chase completed one inning and pitched to three hitters in the second inning without recording an out. He allowed nine runs on four hits and eight walks while uncorking four wild pitches. He had one strikeout.

Tommie Martin came in relief and tossed three innings, allowing one run on three hits and striking out one.

Huron had just five baserunners, with Gabe Waldner the only Tiger to reach base twice, as he had a single and a walk.

Though Pierre jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second game, the Tigers continued to battle, tying the game in the top of the seventh before the Governors were able to walk off in the bottom of the inning with a 3-2 win.

Bubba Peterson opened the game on the mound, tossing five innings, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out two. Martin relieved him and pitched the final 1 2/3 innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits, striking out one.

The Tiger bats came alive in the second game. Peterson had a strong all-around game, with two singles, a hit by pitch, and a pair of stolen bases.

Trace Wenz was the lone other Tiger to reach base twice, with two singles. Chase had a stolen base.
