HURON Hurons annual Memorial Day program was held Monday in the High School auditorium. Russ Dramstad gave the welcome and, after the S.D. National Guard posted the colors, the audience recited the pledge of allegiance and sang the national anthem in unison, the latter accompanied by members of the James Valley Christian High School band.
After an invocation from Keith McMillan and an explanation of Memorial Day from Jake Salathe, JVC students sang This Land is Your Land.
The speaker was retired Lt. Colonel Deb Gilbertson, a Texas resident, but a Huron native. She spoke about the background of the holiday and the relationship of the poppies to the holiday.
The audience joined together to sing God Bless America before Boy Scout Troop 222 presented the wreaths. The program concluded with taps played by the James Valley trumpeteers.
