HURON Student athletes were commended for their accomplishments during Tuesday nights meeting of the Huron School Board. The meeting was held a day later than usual because of the Memorial Day holiday.
The boys tennis team earned the Sportsmanship Award for the fifth year in a row and the sixth time in seven years, an accomplishment the district is proud of.
Eighth-grader Carter Porisch was recognized for setting the shot record of 53-feet, 10-inches at the Huron Middle School track meet on May 12. He broke a record of 50-feet, 9-inches held since 1989 by Brad Peterson.
Congratulations were extended to student athletes recognized at the Athletic Awards program and to Scott DeBoer and the Activities Department for a wonderful program.
Students earning H-Club scholarship awards include Madison Jurgens, Cameron Ruth-Styer, Kolby Hofer, and TJ Lien. Aurora Dreyer earned the Sandi Schaffer Memorial Award, Moses Gross won the Dale Westberg Memorial Award, Kolby Hofer earned the Dennis Busch Memorial Award, TJ Lien was named the Male Athlete of the Year, Madison Jurgens was named the Female Athlete of the Year, TJ Lien and Allison Janes earned the Mark Wendelgass Tiger Roar Scholarship Award, and Matt Goth received the 24- 25 Coach of the Year Award.
Students receiving All-Conference honors at the ESD Track & Field Meet on May 17 were commended. They include senior Zaniyah Lanier in the 100 meter, 4×100 Relay, and Medley Relay, sophomore Isabelle Kremer in Discus, junior Hylton Heinz in Javelin, junior Aly Davis in Javelin, freshman Maggie Storm in Javelin, sophomore Ty Kleinsasser in Shot Put, sophomore Anderson Porisch in Discus, senior Kolby Hofer in Javelin, sophomore Leon Waldner in Triple Jump, sophomore Ava Wamback in the 4×100 Relay and Medley Relay, senior Camerson Ruth-Styer in the 4×100 Relay, freshman Reagan Bischoff in the 4×100 Relay, junior Chloe Carr in the 4×800 Relay & Medley Relay, junior Josie Vlieger in the 4×800 Relay, sophomore Lily Meyer in the 4×800 Relay, junior Ellie Puterbaugh in the 4×800 Relay, and freshman Olivia Tschetter in the Medley Relay.
Athletes taking part in the Class A Boys State Tennis Tournament were commended for placing in the top five and earning All State. They include sophomore Matthew Thin, sophomore Say Poe, freshman Htoo Say Zan, sophomore Maner Htoo, senior Ler Hai Moo, senior Aung Myit, senior Ler Hai Moo and sophomore Ywa Hae Moo.
Junior Hylton Heinz was recognized for breaking the schools javelin record a second time with a throw of 124-feet, 4-inches at the Wendelgass Track Meet.
The public was reminded of Grab & Go Meals that are free for all children ages 1 through 18. The meals consist of three breakfast bags and three lunch bags. The meals can be picked up every Tuesday and Friday at Huron Middle School. Sign up through the school nutrition office.

Appreciation was extended to the Huron Area Education FCU for providing candy for the last days of school, and to the Ellwein family for donating and delivering root beer for the first grade science day.
The Delta Dental Bus was in Huron, and over 10 days they served 56 students and provided $58,000 in completed dental work.
The Dairy Queen provided free blizzards for Teacher Appreciation week, which was May 12-16.
The district received notification from the South Dakota Department of Education that their allocation for Title IA funds next year will be $1.4 million. This compares to last years allocation of $827,000. Instructional Leaders with the school will plan for the utilization of these funds, and anticipate opening several positions in the next few weeks.
The Board approved five new hires and two resignations.
