Huron Destination Imagination team takes sixth in Worlds in engineering challenge

Three Huron Destination Imagination Teams represented Huron in the Global Finals Tournament held May22-25 in Kansas City, Mo.

Each team competed in an international challenge against teams from 13 countries and 30 states. Each team from across the world competes in a two-part competition.

The first part is a team-selected challenge where teams showcase their ideas by performing their own solutions to judges and audience members. The second part is an instant challenge where students solve a problem extemporaneously in five minutes or less through building, creating, or improvising with limited materials or information the best creative-solution.

The elementary Engineering Team is comprised of Georgia Wachter, Kiersten Mittelstedt, Kathryn Schumacher, Calvin Brace, Luxanna Metter and Avery Carr. They are coached by Team Manager Callee Bauman Wachter and Assistant Coach Samantha Brace. Engineering teams were tasked with creating a self-propelled transport device to carry weights across a high-wire in the style of a contemporary circus.

This team received recognition by earning the DaVinci Award a special honor given only when a solution presented is especially creative and innovative.

The elementary Improvisational Team with team members Eli Fergen, Cadee Dawkins, Mariluna Sandate and Skye Sandate, performed well in their challenge. The challenge they picked required them to make a travel story including a researched route with a random starting and ending location that was selected by judges moments prior to their performance. Teams also had to add a special mode of transportation and a seeker character. They competed against over 38 teams and are coached by Audra Fergen.

The high school is represented by the Technical team. The technical challenge was to design and build assembly equipment to stack up to 20 items within a certain perimeter. Additionally, they needed to design and execute the building of demolition equipment to destroy the stacked items within a certain designated area. The team managers were Kathy Micheel and Angie Rans. Team members included Tucker Micheel, Mylie Byrd and Leo Schumacher.

Destination Imaginations vision is to ignite the power of ALL youth to be the creative and collaborative innovators of tomorrow through Science, Technology, Service Learning, Fine Arts, Engineering, and Improvisational Challenges.
