HURON Huron Post 7 opened its season Tuesday with a doubleheader against Yankton Post 12 at Memorial Ballpark, splitting a pair of games.
In the opener, a big second inning keyed the Yankton offense to an 11-1 victory. Post 12 scored five runs in the top of the second inning. Post 7 would respond with a run in the bottom of the inning as Bubba Peterson led off the inning with a triple and was driven in on an infield single by Cooper Bischoff. Unfortunately, that would be the extent of scoring for the home squad.
Peterson opened the game on the mound, going four innings, allowing six runs on five hits and five walks, striking out two. Brady Feenstra finished out the game, throwing three innings, allowing five runs on four hits and five walks while striking out one.
Huron was able to put eight runners on base, but could only bring one around to score. Chase Schuchhardt and Logan Leyendecker each had a single and a walk. Peterson added a triple.
Post 7s pitching was sterling in the second game, allowing a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to stand up for a 2-0 victory.
Leyendecker drew a leadoff walk in the third and proceeded to steal second base and advance to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Trace Wenz singled to score Leyendecker.
Wenz then stole second and was advanced to third on a groundout by Oakley Anderson. Gabe Waldner then grounded out to score Wenz. That was all the offense that Post 7 would need.
Layne Wenzel worked around some control issues, pitching four shutout innings, allowing just one hit but also walking five and striking out five. Anderson finished the game with three scoreless innings, allowing one hit and two walks, striking out three.
Wenz had a pair of singles and a stolen base. Wenzel had a single and a walk. Bischoff and Leyendecker added a stolen base each.
