Letter – Reid 6-18-25

To the editor:

A premise – is the Huron High School Sports Hall of Fame (HOF) biased against boys basketball coaches?

Carrold Heier is the last boys basketball coach in the HOF. He left in 1961. Thats the last coach in the HOF?

Thats 64 years! Bob Judson won the title in 1973, Clark Swisher won in 1982, Tom Reid won in 1993, and Tim Buddenhagen won in 2004. None are in the HOF?

Do you know how hard it is to win a team championship? The last one in Huron was 21 years ago!

How many titles have other boys teams won? Golf won in 1974; Hobe Richards is in the HOF. Football won in 1992; Dan Thelen is in the HOF. Wrestling won in 1994; Ken Cihak is in the HOF. Thats IT!

Dis I say winning a championship is hard? Its special/magical when youre the best team in the state!

Team sports are harder to win a title. Individual sports, like wrestling and track, have lots of individual titles. That is a major deal! There are not individual titles in football/basketball; you have to win as a team! Im thinking that if you win a team title in football/basketball, it should be automatic for getting into the HOF. I dont care what the record was. What more do they have to do?

I asked the current Huron AD in January what the requirements/standards are for getting in the HOF. I was told that there are none because it might handcuff on who gets in. Im now thinking, maybe its the other way around? You can keep coaches out because there is no gold standard. You can put one in or keep one out based on personal whim and favor.

Why no basketball coaches in the HOF since 1961? Explain that logic to me because I cant see it. Judson/Swisher should have gone in with their teams. Why are they blackballed by the HOF committee?
