HURON None of the games were a blowout win, but Huron Post 7 outlasted the Rapid City Post 320 squad in three games over the weekend at Memorial Ballpark.
The biggest scoring outburst for both teams occurred in the first two innings of the first game Friday evening. The visitors put up two runs in the top of the first inning, only to have Post 7 respond with six runs in the bottom of the inning. Post 320 would add another pair in the top of the second to make it 6-4, but Post 7 added another run in the bottom of the inning. A run for each team in the third inning ended the scoring for the game and Huron came away with an 8-5 win.
Bubba Peterson endured the heat to pitch a complete game, going seven innings, allowing five runs on seven hits and three walks, striking out five.
Peterson also had a strong game at the plate, with two hits and a walk, adding in a stolen base. Leadoff man Trace Wenz was 3-for-4 on the day and scored a pair of runs. He had a double.
Cooper Bischoff had a pair of singles and a walk. Anderson Porisch reached base three times on a single and a pair of hit-by-pitches. Gabe Waldner had a single and was hit by a pitch.
Huron walked off the second game Friday. Again, the scoring burst came early, as Post 320 put up a trio of runs in the top of the first and Post 7 responded with two runs in the first and one in the second. The game would remain 3-3 until the bottom of the sixth inning.
With one out in the inning, Logan Leyendecker walked and stole second. A Wenz groundout advanced him to third. Oakley Anderson walked, and with Porisch at the plate, a passed ball scored Leyendecker. Porisch would single, but a groundout ended the inning with Huron up 4-3.
Brady Feenstra came out in the seventh, attempting to pick up the complete game and was hit well right away, with a hard-hit fly out to right field and then a single to center field. That was followed by a triple to center that scored the tying run. Feenstra would buckle down and get a strikeout and a ground out to get out of the inning with the game still tied 4-4.
On the opening pitch of the bottom of the seventh, Cooper Bischoff grounded to second base, but a throwing error not only put him on base, but had the winning run in scoring position at second base.
Layne Wenzel grounded out to third base, but Bischoff didnt stop running, and the Post 320 first baseman made an error attempting to throw home to nab Bischoff, allowing the winning run to score in a 5-4 Huron walk-off win.
Feenstra picked up the win with seven innings of four-run ball, allowing 11 hits and one walk while striking out three.
Wenz led the way from the top of the lineup with a double, a single, a walk, and a stolen base. Bischoff had a pair of singles and stole two bases.
Anderson and Porisch each had a single and a walk. Anderson added a stolen base. Leyendecker had a steal.
Saturdays finale was moved up to 10 a.m. in anticipation of intense heat in the afternoon, and Huron was able to score another walk-off win, 4-3.
The two teams traded single runs over the first two innings, tied at 2-2 until Post 320 scored in the top of the fifth to make it 3-2. Huron was able to knot the score at three in the bottom of the sixth, setting up a dramatic seventh inning.
Jack Pedersen allowed an infield single to leadoff the inning but quickly got a fly out on the second pitch of the next at bat. He would pick off the runner at first and then strike out the third hitter to get Huron up with a chance to win. Wenz drove an 0-2 pitch the other way for a single to right field. Anderson then bunted him over to second. Wenz moved to third on a wild pitch and Porisch drew a walk to put runners on the corners.
Peterson was intentionally walks to set up Bischoff with the bases loaded and one out. He slipped a single past the second baseman into right field to score Wenz with the winning run and a weekend sweep.
Pedersen got the complete game, tossing seven innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and a walk, striking out seven.
Gabe Waldner had a pair of singles. Wenz had a single, a walk, and stole a base. Peterson walked three times and stole two bases.
Pedersen reached base on a walk and a hit-by-pitch and Bischoff had a single and was hit by a pitch. Feenstra added a stolen base.
The weekend sweep moves Post 7 to .500 at 10-10 heading into Tuesdays home doubleheader against Parkston.
