HURON A proposal that coincided with the Dusting off Dakota event on July 3 led to discussion among the commissioners and, eventually, a 3-2 vote to approve waiving the fee for new signs for downtown businesses.
The proposal was brought forth as signage has been created for downtown businesses to present a unified signage strategy ahead of the July 3 event, but the typical fee for a sign of $70 per side would result in as much as $1,500 of lost revenue to the city by waiving the fee. City planner Barry Cranston explained the details of the request to the commission and reported that he had just recently received the request, so he hadnt ironed out a number of details.
One of those details was raised in question by Commissioner Bryan Smith, who asked if the signs would put any downtown businesses over the allowed signage limits in city ordinance. Cranston stated that he had not yet gone through the entire list, but he said there were some businesses that would need to take down some signage to put up the new. Allowing for signage beyond the city ordinance allowable would require a variance request, so that would be separate from the waiver requested here.
Mayor Mark Robish questioned the speed of the decision being made along with the precedent the waiver would set when the rest of Dakota Ave. is completed in 2026 and beyond from Ninth St. to 21st St.
In the end, Commissioners Rich Bragg, Rhonda Kludt, and Smith voted in favor of the waiver, and Commissioner Shawn Harvey and Mayor Robish voted against the measure. It passed on a 3-2 vote.
Commissioner Kludt read a statement from the solid waste department regarding summer collection, stating that collection will begin at 6 a.m. throughout the summer to prevent overheating of trucks. Residents are encouraged to have their bins out the night before collection or get up before 6 a.m. to put out their bins.
