HURON Outgoing School Board member Craig Lee was presented with a plaque and golden apple at Monday nights School Board meeting. Lee has served on the board for eight years.
Being on this board has been extremely educational, seeing how things get funded, how start days get picked, how snow days get chosen, Lee told fellow board members. I never thought about those until I got on the board. Its an eye-opening experience on running a school. I want to thank you for the opportunity to serve. This district is so awesome.
Activities Director Scott DeBoer gave a report on staff in both the athletics and fine arts areas of local education, praising staff members that go above and beyond for the benefit of the students.
We are one of the smaller schools at the AA level, and we have high quality people and offerings, that is a testament to you as a board, DeBoer said. Our fine arts and athletics are garnering respect from our equals at the AA level.
DeBoer highlighted the community and school partnership that draws people to town.
Over the past year a student athlete leadership team has been assembled with seven students representing 17 of 19 sports offered. The group met monthly and was tasked with creating a set of core values that are student-driven and student-led.
I actually threw out the idea of a Portrait of a Graduate, and one of them said lets do a Portrait of an Athlete, he said. They came up with competitive, relationship driven, composed, grateful and a role model. All things we felt we could ask and expect from athletes and our coaches. We continue to find ways to hold ourselves accountable to that.
