HURON Huron Post 7 followed a nearly identical template against Watertown on Tuesday evening and against Brookings on Wednesday night at Memorial Ballpark in a pair of doubleheaders.
Huron fell behind early in the opening game Tuesday as Watertown Post 17 scored seven runs in the second inning. Huron was able to tie the score in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring six runs to make the score 7-7, stranding the go-ahead run at third. Huron would strand a runner at third in the bottom of the sixth as well before Watertown scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh and Huron couldnt push a run across, giving Post 17 a 9-7 victory.
Bubba Peterson opened the game on the hill, tossing four innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits and three walks, striking out two.
Tommie Martin completed the game, allowing two runs over three innings on four hits and a walk while striking out one.
Layne Wenzel was on base three times with a pair of singles and a walk. Anderson Porish drove in two runs with a pair of singles.
Oakley Anderson had a single and a walk while Trace Wenz walked twice. Peterson added a double.
Watertown put up 11 runs in the first two innings, and Huron could not come back. Post 17 put up six runs in the top of the sixth to push the lead to 18-3.
Jack Pedersen was the first of four pitchers for Post 7, going 1 2/3 innings, allowing ten runs, four earned, on four hits and three walks, striking out two.
Wenzel took over and allowed two runs over 3 1/3 innings on three hits and two walks, striking out three. Chase Schuchhardt allowed six runs over 2/3 of an inning on two hits and six walks. Wenz closed out the inning with one out.
Wenz had three singles from the leadoff spot. Porisch walked twice, and Peterson had a double and was hit by a pitch.
Wednesday evening, a nip-and-tuck game went to Brookings in the final inning and the second game went to Post 74 with a big lead early.
In the opener, the two teams each scored a single run in the second and that held until the bottom of the fifth, when Huron was able to push four runs across to claim a 5-1 lead. Brookings responded with three in the top of the sixth and the top of the seventh each to come away with a 7-5 victory.
Brady Feenstra took the mound and threw 5 2/3 innings, allowing four runs, one earned, on three hits and five walks, striking out six.
Anderson closed the game with 1 1/3 innings of relief, allowing three runs on three hits and two walks while striking out two.
Porisch had a double and a single. Gabe Waldner and Logan Leyendecker each had a pair of singles and stole a base.
Anderson added a double and Cooper Bischoff stole a base.
The Post 74 Bandits put up seven runs in the top of the first and made it stand up in a 10-3 win for the visitors.
Leyendecker took the mound and allowed nine runs over three innings on eight hits and three walks, striking out two. Wenz pitched four innings of hitless relief, allowing one run on five walks and striking out three.
Peterson had a pair of singles. Leyendecker had a single, a walk, and stole a base. Wenz had a single and a walk.
Post 7 falls to 11-15 before their home doubleheader Monday against Harrisburg Gold.
Pierre sweeps doubleheader from Huron 16U
PIERRE The Huron 16U squad followed the same template on Monday that Post 7 would follow the next two days as 16U dropped a pair of games in Pierre, 6-4 and 15-0.
In the opening game, Huron fell behind 6-0 heading into the top of the fifth inning, but Huron was able to push across four runs, but fell short, 6-4.
Parker Bischoff opened the game on the mound, going 5 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on ten hits and five walks, striking out four. Zach Scheer got the final two outs.
The Huron offense put a dozen baserunners on, with Colt Culver leading the way with a pair of doubles. Tyce Huber also had a double.
Bischoff had a single and a walk. Carter Porisch had a single and was hit by a pitch.
The Pierre offense took advantage of defensive miscues and quickly scored a run-rule victory, 15-0, in the second game.
Gavin Waldner took the mound, allowing 15 runs, 10 earned, on 13 hits and two walks over 2 2/3 innings.
Huron falls to 9-12 ahead of a trip to Renner on Monday.
