Huron 16U sweeps Renner

RENNER The Huron 16U teener team won an exciting first game of a doubleheader Monday over Renner Post 307 16U before recording a shutout to take the sweep, 7-6 and 3-0.

In the first game, the two teams went back and forth as Huron put up a pair of runs in the first, with Post 307 matching that in the bottom of the third. Huron would add a run in the top of the fourth, and Renner pushed across a run in the bottom of the sixth. After a scoreless seventh inning, the teams went to extra innings with a 3-3 tie.

Huron would start with Tyce Huber on second base. Korbin Brock reached on an error that moved Huber to third. Brock stole second before Jimmie Martin singled to score Huber and move Brock to third.

Martin got to second base on defensive indifference and Parker Bischoff walked to load the bases. Carter Porisch then came to the plate and nailed a triple to the opposite field to clear the bases and give Huron a 7-3 lead heading into the bottom of the inning.

Zach Scheer walked in a run in the bottom of the inning and then an error allowed two more runs to score to leave runners on second and third and a one-run lead, but Scheer got the strikeout to end the game with Huron on top by one.

Nolan Stahly went five innings to open the game, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks, striking out five. Scheer finished the game with three innings of relief, allowing three runs on two hits and six walks, striking out three.

Martin sparked the offense from the leadoff spot with four singles and a pair of stolen bases. Porisch had a triple, a single, and was hit by a pitch. Landon Hulst had a pair of singles and stole a base.

Stahly and Gavin Waldner each had a single, a walk, and were each hit by a pitch. Waldner added a stolen base. Bischoff also had a walk and a single.

Brock had a steal.

Huron had excellent defense to support control issues from the pitching as starter Colt Culver went five shutout innings, though he did allow three hits, six walks, and unleashed three wild pitches. He also struck out two. Jaxon Greenfield threw a scoreless inning with two strikeouts to complete the game.

Culver sparked the offense with a trio of singles and a walk, adding a stolen base as well. Jackson Ford and Waldner each had a double and a walk. Waldner added a stolen base.

Huron moves to 11-12 ahead of this weekends tournament in Brookings.
