HURON After an incredible power display by the visitors in the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday night, Huron Post 7 came back to claim victory in the nightcap for a split with the Harrisburg Legion Gold at Memorial Ballpark.
Harrisburgs bats stole the show in the first game, as 12 of the teams 15 hits went for extra bases, including three that cleared the wall in a 17-2 drubbing for Gold.
Layne Wenzel opened the game on the mound, pitching three innings, allowing nine runs on eight hits and four walks while striking out one.
Tommie Martin finished the game with two innings. Martin allowed eight runs on seven hits and four walks, striking out two.
Bubba Peterson was the lone Post 7 hitter with multiple hits, as he smacked a double and added a single and a stolen base.
Oakley Anderson walked twice, and Anderson Porisch had a single and was hit by a pitch.
The second game started off similarly rough for Huron as Harrisburg put up five runs in the first and two in the second to claim a 7-0 lead. Post 7 then chipped away, with four runs in the bottom of the second, tying the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth.
The teams would trade runs, with Harrisburg scoring in the top of the sixth and Huron pushing across a game-tying run in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.
In the first extra inning, Harrisburg quickly grounded out twice, but then were able to string together a walk and two singles to score before Peterson was able to record a strikeout to finish the inning.
In the bottom of the eighth, Cooper Bischoff singled and then stole second before Chase Schuchhardt walked. A wild pitch moved both runners up 90 feet, but an infield single by Gabe Waldner did not allow either runner to advance, leaving the bases loaded.
Anderson walked to drive in a run, but a fly out to right field was too shallow to score the winning run, and a strikeout and a ground out ended the inning for Huron with the bases juiced.
Peterson made quick work of Harrisburg in the top of the ninth, giving Post 7 the opportunity to walk off with the win. Peterson was placed at second base and Huron was awarded one out, under the rules of extra innings.
After Peterson advanced to third base, Porisch drew an eight-pitch walk to put runners on first and third. A wild pitch with Wenzel at the plate would score Peterson with the winning run as Huron walked off 10-9 winners.
Jack Pedersen opened the game on the mound, allowing seven runs over two innings on seven hits and three walks. Brady Feenstra came in relief, throwing 3 1/3 innings, allowing one run on five hits and two walks while striking out three.
Peterson closed the game with 3 1/3 innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits and three walks. He struck out two.
Logan Leyendecker reached base five times in the game, with two singles and three walks. Peterson had a double, a single, and two walks.
Anderson had a single, two walks, and stole a base. Trace Wenz, Porisch, and Waldner each had a single and a walk.
Wenz added a steal. Wenzel had a single and was hit by a pitch.
Bischoff and Feenstra each had one steal.
Post 7 (12-15) heads to the Gopher Classic in Minneapolis, beginning today.
