Huron 16U finishes 2-2 at Brookings Classic

BROOKINGS The Huron 16U team bounced back after early struggles at the Buffalo Wild Wings Classic tournament last weekend in Brookings to finish with a 2-2 record over the weekend.

Huron grabbed an early lead with a run in the top of the first in the first game of the tourney on Friday against Brandon Valley, and that one run held up all the way until the bottom of the sixth, when the Lynx plated four runs to come away with a 4-1 victory.

Sean Janes went the distance on the mound, throwing six innings, allowing four runs on eight hits, four walks, and six strikeouts.

Jimmie Martin had a single and a walk from the leadoff spot and also stole a base. Landon Hulst stole two bases.

The second game of the weekend was Saturday morning against Becker, and Huron again scored first, then followed that up with two runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth to take a 7-5 lead. However, Becker scored one in the bottom of the fifth and pushed across two runs in the bottom of the sixth to come away with an 8-7 victory over Huron.

Colt Culver started the game on the mound, going five innings, allowing six runs, with just one earned, on five hits and three walks, striking out four. Carter Porisch allowed two unearned runs in one inning of relief, though he did strike out the side.

Porisch had a strong day at the plate, with a double, single, and a stolen base. Gavin Waldner, Tyce Huber, and Martin each had a pair of singles. Waldner and Martin each had three stolen bases.

Hulst walked twice and stole a base.

After being bitten by comeback wins by two opponents, Huron flipped the script in the second game of Saturday, as they scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to earn a walk-off 6-5 victory over Mings Restaurant.

Porisch made the start, going four innings, allowing two unearned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out five. Huber allowed two runs and recorded just one out, walking three. Josh Gilbert closed out the game, allowing an unearned run on two hits while striking out two.

Jaxon Greenfield had a single and a walk. Martin had a single and was hit by pitch, adding a stolen base. Korbin Brock walked twice.

Parker Bischoff had a double for Huron. Hulst and Diego Colon each had a stolen base.

Huron closed out the weekend with another walk off win, defeating Excelsior White by the score of 12-11 with four runs in the decisive fifth inning.

Bischoff started the game on the mound, allowing seven runs on six hits and seven walks, striking out four. Greenfield closed the game, getting the final two outs, but not before he allowed four runs on two hits and three walks.

Zach Scheer had a big game, with a double and two singles at the plate along with a stolen base. Brock ripped a pair of doubles.

Porisch had a pair of singles and also stole two bases. Culver had two singles and a stolen base. Gilbert walked twice and had a steal.

Janes had a single, a walk, and a stolen base. Bischoff and Huber each had a double. Hulst also stole a base.

Huron finishes the weekend with a 13-14 record heading into Thursdays triangular in Sioux Falls.
