New roof in progress at Dakotaland Museum

While work crews are hard at work overhead, the museum doors remain open below. A long-anticipated new roof is being installed on the Dakotaland Museum, marking a major step forward in preserving the historic building and the collections within it.

Although the roof project is not yet complete, the museum remains open for business. The portion over the original building is finished and there are no more leaks. Visitors may now stroll through the exhibits without dodging buckets and pails.

This main area includes the Model T Ford and race car; the State Fair display and Boxcar exhibit; the log cabin; and farm equipment and household items.

Unfortunately, the roof over the addition is not yet completed. To protect sensitive items during the construction process, many of the displays are temporarily covered in protective plastic. However, a favorite among visitors the museums extensive taxidermy collection is still on full display.

There is also plenty to see in the display cases, which hold personal items such as brushes, combs, hair accessories, and razors; quilts; toys; medical supplies and instruments; and much more.

The Dakotaland Museum is located on the State Fairgrounds and is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free; however, donations are greatly appreciated. Children 12 years and under must be accompanied by an adult.
