HURON The Huron City Commission approved replacing aeration pumps at Ravine Lake as required through an agreement with South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks during their regular meeting on Monday, August 11.
The total cost of the pumps is $2,663.46 and that will come from second penny reserves.
The meeting opened with public forum, during which Commissioner Rhonda Kludt encouraged residents to participate in the Heartland United Way Day of Caring on Tuesday, August 12.
Commissioner Bryan Smith brought to public forum a reminder that Huron native Jamee Kattner was selected Miss South Dakota in May and is currently fundraising for her trip to the Miss America competition in September.
Finally, Jennifer Hofer of Jeannies Rentals discussed a mowing notice she received and concern regarding notifying property owners when rental properties are being cited for ordinance violations.
City engineer Brett Runge presented to the commission a pay request from Menning Excavating Inc. for progress on the water main replacement in the amount of $499,560.85. Runge mentioned that the water main work that was scheduled to last into next year is on track to be completed in 2025.
Commissioners also:
– Acknowledged the successful completion of the 60-day probationary period for Jessica Sokpo, part-time year-round library clerk, effective Aug. 10.
– Accepted the voluntary retirement of Beverly Dunn, library technician at the Huron Public Library, effective Aug. 22.
– Approved a raffle permit for Beadle County Humane Society for a raffle at Ravine Lake Shelter on Sept. 27 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
– Approved a parade permit submitted by HHS student council for a parade on Sept. 26 at 2 p.m.
– Approved a raffle permit submitted by SDS Central Chapter of Credit Unions for several raffles.
– Approved a special alcoholic beverage license application submitted by Goethel, Inc. (Hursts Corner) for a wedding on August 30 at the Issac Walton.
– Approved temporary use of the Sanborn Weekly Journal for publication of legal notices.
The solid waste department announced the Labor Day weekend closure of the rubble site from Saturday, August 30, through Monday, September 1. Mondays garbage, recycling, and yard waste pickup will be done on Wednesday, September 3. Residents are reminded to have containers out the night before as trucks will not be rerouted.
The commission adjourned from public meeting and met in executive session regarding personnel and then held two work sessions, one on the Welcome to Huron signs and the second on the 2026 budget.
The next city commission meeting is Monday, August 18, at 5:30 p.m., in the commission room at City Hall.
