HURON Seventh-grade teachers presented an overview of the past years interim assessment training of seventh-grade students to the Huron School Board at Monday evenings regular meeting.
Student testing across the board was above the state in proficiency for each subject at Huron Middle School, with the largest jump noticed in math. Teachers attributed this to working at the beginning of class throughout the year with students on proficiency items that would be tested. They also mentioned that shifting the testing to morning only allowed students to focus in the morning and then have the afternoon to recharge for the next day.
Thanks were expressed to volunteers with the summer grab-and-go bags. The program averaged 817 bags distributed each Tuesday and Friday, amounting to more than 9,800 meals each week. Sarah May of Modern Woodmen was also thanked for a donation of school supplies and pencil bags to the Madison 2-3 Center.
Jolene Konechne presented a wrap-up of the summer school program. She noted that the focus was on reading and math during the 14-day period.
Nine library policies were approved on a second reading. The district wellness policy was also approved on a second reading.
Five policies regarding staffing along with handbooks all received a first reading and will have a second reading at a future meeting. Finally, the district bus pickup points resolution with Wolsey-Wessington and Iroquois schools was approved.
Board member assignments were reviewed, as was an organizational chart.
The board also:
– Approved nine new hires.
– Approved four resignations.
– Approved nine staff contracts.
– Approved a construction agreement between the Huron School District and Greater Huron Development Corporation.
– Approved five advertising agreements.
– Approved the designation of the Sanborn Weekly Journal as the official newspaper of the district.
– Approved an agreement for consultant services between Pawlowski Speech Therapy, LLC, and the Huron School District.
The board adjourned the public meeting to convene an executive session.
