IROQUOIS A new daycare opened its doors on Monday, July 7, in Iroquois. The owner of the business is Kali Burma, who graduated from Iroquois High School this spring. During her sophomore year, Burma first thought about someday having her own in-home daycare.
I have always loved kids, Burma exclaimed. Having my own daycare wouldve been a way for me to do what I love and help my community at the same time.
Throughout her middle school and high school years, Burma enjoyed babysitting for different families in the community. During her junior and senior years, she volunteered her time to help in the preschool room for Mrs. Mary Wienbar.
The kids loved to see her come, said Wienbar. She was great at working with them. Shed even, at times, create her own lessons to teach.
Burma decided during her sophomore year that she wanted to work towards having her own daycare. What really inspired her to do her own in-home based daycare was when she job shadowed an in-home daycare in Huron.
I knew it was for sure what I truly wanted to do, she said.
At the end of her sophomore year, her high school guidance counselor and FCCLA advisors informed her of a new program called Child Development Associates Certification (CDA) that the state offered for high schoolers interested in child development.
Burma checked into it and decided to follow through, even though it would take a lot of work on top of all her high school assignments and commitments.
Kali worked super hard all through her high school career for this, says former FCCLA advisor Vicki Dant. I am super proud of her. She has always had a love for children and gets to know them on a personal level.
Dant continued, She is going to excel as a daycare owner.
A CDA certification is a nationally-recognized credential for early childhood educators and a special credential for people who work with young children. It proves that theyve been trained in child development, know how to create a safe and learning-rich environment, and have real experience working with kids. Getting a CDA means someone is serious about giving children the best start in life.
Kali is a kids magnet! exclaimed her mother, Jodi Burma. She has always enjoyed spending time and taking care of children.
Kali owns her home in Iroquois that her family helped her remodel and prepare for opening her in-home daycare. She was also gifted many toys, books, and daycare necessities from friends and family. The in-home daycare is called Kalis Kid Care LLC.
She is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., offering a safe, loving, and affordable child care service.
Burmas daycare offers nutritious snacks and meals, fun, age-appropriate activities, and Kali is CPR and first aid certified. She will have two full-time toddler openeings when school starts this week, and she can take drop-ins depending on how many children she has on a particular day.
If anyone is in need of child care and is interested in Kalis Kid Care, she can be contacted by phone at 605-354-0388, by email at [email protected], or on Facebook at Kalis Kid Care.
We are very proud of her for working hard to reach her goal of opening a daycare, said Jodi. From graduating high school to opening a business a few months later, it took a lot of hard work, courage, dedication, and commitment!
Jodi added, She knew what she wanted to do, knew there was a high demand and need, and set her mind to it and achieved.
