Historic displays part of Downtown Huron celebration

HURON Downtown Huron was buzzing with activity on July 3, as community members gathered to celebrate history, heritage, and hometown pride. Families, longtime residents, and visitors alike strolled through downtown, taking in historic displays that sparked memories and storytelling across generations.

Among the highlights of the celebration, Kathy Micheel shared information on Digitization, Preserve and Share FOREVER, encouraging families to safeguard their treasured photos, stories, and documents for generations to come.

The collections featured in the Downtown Historic Huron display in the Centre Plaza were made possible through collaboration and items shared from Jennifer Littlefield of the Huron Public Library, Louise Van Poll, Executive Director of Dakotaland Museums, Michealle Ransom of I Am Photography, and other local contributors and supporters, including the Huron College Archives and Stephanie Warner of Just Fabulous.

The celebration doesnt end here. As the 2025 South Dakota State Fair approaches, visitors are encouraged to keep the tradition alive. Many of the special window displays showcased during the July 3 event remain up, offering a unique chance to step back in time while enjoying todays vibrant downtown. Be sure to also visit the South Dakota Schools display at the Centre Plaza during the fairan exhibit that connects education, history, and community pride across generations.

Looking ahead, Kathy Micheel will be presenting at the 2025 South Dakota State Fair on Value Added Ag Center Day, Thursday, August 28, from 1:00 to 1:30 PM in the Horizons Hall Auditorium (formerly the Womens Building, located behind the cooking demonstration area). Visitors are encouraged to attend her session, hear her insights, and sign up for prize drawings at both the FOREVER booth and the South Dakota Genealogical Society booth.

Fairgoers are also invited to stop by throughout the week, as both booths will feature additional Genealogy breaks and live FOREVER demonstrations, offering multiple opportunities to learn, connect, and preserve family stories.

From the legendary horse to beloved storefronts showcasing memorabilia of years gone by, these displays remind us of the people, places, and stories that helped shape Huron. Who remembers the famous horse and store that brought so much life to downtown?

The July 3 celebration was just the beginninglets keep the spirit of downtown alive as we head into fair season and beyond. The South Dakota State Fair is also honoring the upcoming 250th Anniversary of the United States with early celebrations. Visitors are encouraged to stop by the South Dakota Genealogical Society booth in the Education Building to browse photo albums of South Dakota Small Town Memories and place a pin on the state map to mark their familys hometown connections.
