HURON The James Valley Christian Vikings remained undefeated with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the defending state champion Vermillion Tanagers at JVC.
The Tanagers defeated the Vikings by the same score in last years state title game.
Gavin Waldner got the Vikings on the board nine minutes in on a goal, assisted by Noah Fast. Vermillion would even the score in the 30th minute and the teams were tied 1-1 at half.
JVC came out firing, with Waldner picking up his second goal of the game just one minute into the second half on an assist by Carson Dorris.
Vermillion tied the game six minutes later, but Isaac Fast quickly answered with a rebound goal to give JVC the 3-2 lead they needed.
Jonah Niederbuamer had 14 saves in goal.
JVC won the junior varsity game, 3-1.
The Vikings (4-0) return to their home field Friday against Belle Fourche.
