Huron Public Library receives recycled bench

HURON The Huron Area Women Business Leaders placed another TREX bench at the Huron Public Library on Wednesday, August 27. The group began the project to recycle soft plastic into usable items more than a year ago and, to date, has collected nearly 5,000 pounds of soft plastic.

TREX is known for outdoor projects, including decks and outdoor furniture, and it is among the top companies in the United States in functional recycling. TREX offers a free program for community groups to recycle used soft plastic products to be manufactured into benches. A bench was also recently placed at the Huron Area Chamber of Commerce.

Plastic collection points in Huron are at East River Nursery, the Campus Center, Huron Public Library and the Huron Area Chamber of Commerce. Donated plastic is weighed and then collected at a drop-off site, where it is picked up by weekly TREX collection trucks.

Plastic collection is also being done in the Huron area by the Pearl Creek Boosters 4-H Club, which has collected 1,000 pounds of plastic, working with the Huron Archery Club at Gibbs Park in Huron. Other 4-H groups are in the planning stages to do similar collections.

Any group or organization that wishes to participate can go to the TREX website at Nextrex.com to get more information on the program and learn how to participate in the project.

The soft plastics eligible for this program are primarily plastic bags, which do not qualify for recycling under the City of Huron Solid Waste Departments recycling program.
