September activities at the Huron Public Library

The Huron Public Library is excited to launch the Decades Reading Challenge, a year-long celebration leading up to Americas 250th Anniversary in July 2026. Beginning in September, readers are invited to journey through history by exploring one decade at a timestarting with 1776 and continuing through the 2020s. Each month participants can choose a fiction or nonfiction title set in that decade, record their progress, and collect fun keepsakes along the way. Its a unique opportunity to discover new books while traveling through 250 years of American history!

Kids Korner (Birth Grade 3)
The Huron Public Library is excited to welcome families back this fall with a full lineup of engaging programs in the Kids Korner! Theres something for every age to enjoy:

Bubbles and Books Storytime Join us each Tuesday at 11 a.m. for stories, songs, and bubbles, perfect for children ages 05 and their caregivers.

After the Bell Afterschool Program Every Wednesday at 4 p.m., kids can stop in for fun, hands-on activities. September features Tinker Time with KNex and the always-popular Pokmon Pals!

Homeschool Book Buddies & Hangout On Wednesdays at 11 a.m., homeschool families can connect through literature-based activities and social time in the library.

NEW! Tots Music Program Children ages 04 and their caregivers are invited to a brand-new music class led by Emily Salinas. This program will be held on the second Saturday of the month. Spots are limited, so registration is required.

Apple Orchard Dramatic Play Center All month long, kids can explore the librarys imaginative play space designed to look like a cheerful apple orchard.

Tweens & Teens (Grades 412)
Among Us in Real Life Friday, Sept. 12, at 5 p.m. or 5:45 p.m.
Step into the world of Among Us in this live-action game where you are the crewmateor maybe the imposter! Work together to complete tasks, watch for suspicious activity, and figure out whos sabotaging the mission before its too late. The game is limited to eight players per session, with two time slots available: 5 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. Registration is required.

Watercolor Classes – registration opened Sept. 2, at 9 a.m. Curious about watercolor painting but not sure where to start? Join artist Sally Stansfield for a two-part beginner class where youll learn the basics, experiment with techniques, and complete your own finished piece in a fun, supportive environment. The same class will be offered at three different times with a limit of 15 participants per class:
– Class 1 on Sept. 16 and 18 from 4 to 5 p.m.
– Class 2 on Sept. 30 and Oct. 2 from 4 to 5 p.m.
– Class 3 on Oct. 7 and 9 from 4 to 5 p.m.

A refundable $10 deposit is required within three days of registration and will be returned at the end of the second class. No-shows or cancellations made during the week of the event will forfeit deposits. If the deposit is a hardship, please contact the librarywe are happy to work with you. Laser Tag at the Library Sept. 26 at 5 p.m.
Grab your friends for an action-packed laser tag adventure at the library!

Players will compete in fast-paced rounds including Free-For-All, Team Battle, and Capture the Base. All equipment is provided, and matches last 57 minutes with rotation so everyone gets a turn. Space is limited and registration is required.

Adults
Author Talk & Book Signing with Roger Wonnenberg – Sept. 4, at 6 p.m.
Join South Dakota author Roger Wonnenberg as he shares his book, Wonnenbergs Travels, the true story of three small-town boys who set off for Australia in 1974 and found themselves on an unforgettable journey of work, adventure, and faith. Inspired by his students to write down his travel stories, Wonnenberg will talk about his experiences and sign copies of his book.

Chamber Mixer – Sept. 9, from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
The Library is pleased to host the September Chamber Mixer, a great opportunity for networking and community engagement. During the event, the Library Board of Trustees will introduce the newly established Huron Library Foundation and share how it will support the Librarys long-term goals.

Game Night: Pictionary Fall Library Edition – Sept. 12, at 6:30 p.m.
Bring your sense of humor and join us for a night of fast-paced sketching, wild guesses, and plenty of laughs. No drawing skills are required. Earn a bonus raffle entry by showing your library card or signing up for one. Registration is required.

Coffee Chat with Police Chief Derek Layher – Sept. 16, at 6:30 p.m.
Enjoy coffee and conversation as part of our Coffee Chat Series, where local leaders share about their work in the community. Chief Layher will discuss the police department and take part in an open dialogue with attendees.

Medicare 101 Educational Meeting – Sept. 22, at 6 p.m.
Do you have questions about Medicare? Join Brenda Arteman and Betty Thomas of 1st Stop Insurance for an informative session covering Medicare basics, supplemental and prescription drug plans, Medicare Advantage, and how to sign up. Get answers to your questions and cut through the confusion of ads and mailers.

Library Schedule Changes
On Thursday, Sept. 11, the Library will open at 10:30 a.m., due to staff training.
