HURON Fourteen outstanding women have been nominated by their communities to be honored at the Spirit of Dakotas 39th Anniversary Celebration and Award Banquet in Huron on October 4.
They are Deanell Backlund, Mitchell; Louise Bauman, Huron; Sydney Davis, Burbank; Angela Drake, Sioux Falls; Angela Fisk, Emery; Kris Frerk, Garretson; Tawana Grueb, Onida; Julie Johnson, Mina; Faith Miller, Belle Fourche; Elizabeth Nepodal, Platte; Linda Paulson, Buffalo; Annie Tice-Poseley, Wall; Mary Lee Villanueva, Yankton; and Joan Wink, Howes.
Inspiration for the award is the nine-foot sculpture, Spirit of Dakota, created by South Dakota Artist Laureate Dale Lamphere. The bronze stands at the entrance to the Crossroads Hotel in Huron. The award is given to an outstanding South Dakota woman who reflects the Spirit of Dakota by demonstrating leadership, vision, courage and strength of character and by her example, inspires others to make a difference in their community and state.
The winner will be chosen by a state-wide commission of Tona Rozum, Chair, Mitchell; Julie Garreau, Eagle Butte; Jean Hunhoff, Yankton; Carol Johnson, Watertown; Suzette Kirby, Sioux Falls; First Lady Sandy Rhoden, Pierre; Jacque Sly, Rapid City; Marsha Sumpter, Kadoka; and Ginger Thomson, Brookings.
All 14 women will be given distinguished recognition throughout the many activities planned including Tea in the Afternoon in the country home of Rodney and Beckie Freeman, an art show open to the public in the lobby of the Huron Event Center from 4 to 7 p.m., a 5:30 social, and 6:30 banquet.
