County holds five-year bridge plan meeting with townships

HURON Jason Fritzsche, Beadle County highway superintendent, hosted county townships to discuss the bridge plan for the county for the next five years. He explained that federal funds will no longer be available, which could mean fewer bridges per year get matching funding, so the cost would be entirely on the county. He did say that the county has pushed hard to utilize the Bridge Improvement Grant (BIG) program to get the worst-rated bridges in the county upgraded in the last few years.

Fritzsche also explained the bridge numbering system so townships can understand how the county numbers the structures within the county. He also discussed inspecting culverts with documented regularity in order to have records just in case FEMA ever requests them.

The Beadle County Commission also approved three joint powers agreements for BIG preliminary engineering agreements. The commission approved a final pay request and change order from Graves Construction for work on a structure this summer. The payment request was $69,078.43.

A construction contract was approved for the 2025 Beadle County detour project, as was a payment to Barret Township for a rural access infrastructure program project.

The county also approved a variance request to move a mobile home, filed by Chris Lorenz as well as John and Brenda Lorenz. The commission also approved moving two structures near Lake Byron.

The commission next meets on September 30 at 9 a.m. in the commission room on the second floor of the courthouse.
