HURON — October is Domestic Violence Awareness month, and the Jan Manolis Family Safe Center is kicking off the month with a fundraiser of Pancakes at the Elks on Sunday, October 12, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. All you can eat pancakes, French toast, eggs, sausage, coffee and juice are all on the menu for breakfast.
The price is $7 for adults and children under 12 are $6.
Their next fundraiser will be an evening of fun with the Johnny Holm Band on Friday Oct. 24, at the Huron Event Center. Because it is close to Halloween, they would love to see guests arrive in costumes if they choose to get into the holiday spirit. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the band starts playing at 8. For those of you who know the Johnny Holm Band, you will really enjoy this night out.
On the Friday before Thanksgiving, they will be hosting Just Desserts at Coborns. This very large bake sale begins at 8 a.m. and goes until all the goodies are gone, which is usually before noon. There will be such a variety of pies, cakes, cookies, snacks, breads, cupcakes, caramel and cinnamon rolls and whatever else you can imagine. Let them help you with the holiday baking.
And the last fundraiser for the program, is the one people start asking about earlier every year. The day after Thanksgiving the JMFSC starts selling the Prime Time Gift Cards. Prime Time Tavern donates $50 gift cards to sell, and $25 from each card goes to the shelter. Usually, they are sold out in a week or two. They make great Christmas gifts.
The program also receives support through the United Way.
Huron and the surrounding area have been so supportive of our program over the years, said Jan Manolis, director of the JMFSC. It would be impossible for us to offer the services we do without the great help we get from friends who share our concerns for victims of abuse. We offer shelter, hot-line phones 24/7, counseling, support groups, food, transportation, help with housing and job searches, assistance with Orders of Protection and anything else victims need that we can provide.
They also offer parenting classes, which are open to anyone in the community.
Domestic Violence does not discriminate, Manolis said. It touches wealthy families, poor families; old people and young people; all ethnic backgrounds and all denominations; married people and single people. It is especially devastating on children who suffer along with their parents.
The JMFSC office number is (605) 554-0398. Hot Line numbers are (605)350-6663 and (605)350-6690.
Tickets for these fundraisers can be purchased at the JMFSC office, by calling 605-554-0398, or at Rainbow Flowers, Manolis Grocery or A-1 Body Shop, or any one of the shelters advocates.
God bless you all, Manolis said.
