To the editor:

President Trumps executive order to change the Pentagons name from the Department of Defense to the Department of War will cost Americans billions of tax dollars to rename Pentagon agencies, global bases, stationery, and other signage. South Dakotans went down this road in 1989 when Northern State College was officially renamed Northern State University. From a President who campaigned on the promise of cutting wasteful spending, he is doing just the opposite.

Renaming the department could be perceived as an aggressive stance internationally, escalating tensions with allies and adversaries alike, and undermining diplomatic relationships. The term defense resonates with a notion of protection and security for citizens. War may evoke fear, conflict, and violence, which could impact national morale and the global perception of the United States.

Instead, we should use that money to invest in public education, schools, and higher education. Expand affordable healthcare, including mental health services, and invest in infrastructure by revamping roads, bridges, public transit, and broadband infrastructure to boost economic growth and ensure safety. Local communities would benefit from programs that foster social cohesion, reduce crime, and enhance the quality of life, which should be the priority.

Maintaining the name Department of Defense helps reflect the departments multifaceted role in safeguarding national security through various means, not solely through warfare.
