HURON The Huron City Commission approved three change orders and a pair of pay requests as part of Monday evenings regular meeting.
Assistant engineer Dennis Bennett presented the items to the commission. The first change order was filed by BX Civil & Construction for railroad casing size change for Dakota Ave. improvements at an increase of $16,300. The second change order was also filed by BX Civil & Construction for a streetscape irrigation booster pump for an increase of $25,000. The final change order was filed by TLC Olson Construction for lift station improvements in the amount of $5,745. All three change orders were approved.
The commission also approved a pay request from BX Civil & Construction for Dakota Ave. improvements in the amount of $495,869.49. A pay request from North Star Logistics LLC doing business as Sentry Crane for work on the transfer station in the amount of $262,019.58 was also approved.
Bennett also received approval to go to bid for propane supply quotes. The quote opening was approved for Oct. 14, at 2 p.m.
The meeting opened with a pair of variance requests.
The first was filed by Cody Hansen, project address 79 Lincoln Ave. SW, to construct a commercial building zero feet from the East property line. City planner Barry Cranston explained to the board of adjustment that the zero setback is in line with other properties in the same neighborhood. This was approved.
The second variance request was filed by Carlos Rivera to open a tattoo and piercing business at 1506 Dakota Ave. S. With no objections from neighbors, this was approved.
Dale Fortin, solid waste supervisor, presented to the commission a proposal to hire an employee budgeted for 2026 due to strong applicants for the position. He reported that revenue for the department has increased to afford moving up the timeline. This was approved.
The commission approved using the 2026 community forestry grant. Parks and Recreation Director Chad Schroder reported that he will use the $2,450 from the grant to remove 12 ash trees preventatively from Memorial Park and plant 15 trees of various varieties to replace the trees that are removed.
Commissioners also:
Accepted the voluntary retirement of Dave Lentz, water-sewer maintenance 2, effective October 17. Lentz was recognized for 19 years with the city.
Approved to post internally and advertise for a water-sewer maintenance, uncertified position.
Accepted the voluntary resignation of Jerry Dennis, part-time year-round custodian and approved advertising to fill the position.
Approved the change in classification for seasonal employee Mathew Persing from softball maintenance to park maintenance, effective Sept. 23.
Approved a parade permit submitted by the Huron Chamber for the Parade of Lights on Nov. 28 at 7 p.m. on Dakota Ave.
Approved a raffle permit for the Huron Chamber for the Ringneck Festival on Nov. 7-8 at the Huron Event Center.
Approved a special on-sale alcoholic beverage license for the Huron Country Club for a wedding on Oct. 4 at the Campus Center.
Approved a special on-sale alcoholic beverage license for Top Floor Events and the Huron Chamber for a Chamber Mixer at M-O FCU on Nov. 13 at 5 p.m.
Set Oct. 6 as the public hearing to consider an on-off sale malt beverage and SD farm wine license for The Tap House, LLC doing business as The Vault, 79 2nd St. SW.
Commissioners then went into executive session for a contractual matter and closed the evening in a work session regarding the 2026 budget.
