First Lady Sandy Rhoden named to Spirit of Dakota Selection Commission

HURON First Lady Sandy Rhoden, Pierre, has accepted a position on the Spirit of Dakota Selection Commission. The announcement was made by the Spirit of Dakota Award Society of Huron. Rhoden joins a 10-member commission representing a diverse spectrum of business, civic, and professional backgrounds. The commission includes Tona Rozum, Mitchell, Chair; Julie Garreau, Eagle Butte; Jean Hunhoff, Yankton; Carol Johnson, Watertown; Julie Johnson, Aberdeen, Suzette Kirby, Sioux Falls; Jacque Sly, Rapid City; Marsha Sumpter, Kadoka; Ginger Thomson, Brookings; and Sandy Rhoden, Pierre.

Sandy graduated high school in Madison, South Dakota, and attended college at Dakota State University, where she double majored in Physical Education and Art. Her first teaching job was in Dupree, SD.

Sandy earned an elementary education degree from Black Hills State University. She taught multiple grades in rural Meade County. She received the Teacher of the Year Award in 1995 from Meade 46-1 School District and is included in the Whos Who among American Teachers.

Sandy is active in the Community Baptist Church of Union Center. She has written the Central Meade County News since 1999. She also co-authored and illustrated a book with her sister, Marletta, which is titled, Im a Little Legislator and Proud of It. Sandy has been active in both the local and state organizations of the Federation of Republican Women and serves on the Board of Directors for South Dakota Kids Belong.

Sandy enjoys spending time with her husband and their four adult sons and families.

The public is invited to attend the 39th annual Spirit of Dakota Award event honoring fourteen exceptional South Dakota women at the Huron Event Center on October 4. A social begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by the awards banquet at 6:30 p.m. The Spirit of Dakota Art Show will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Event Center.
