City approves $40 million budget

HURON The Huron City Commission approved the second reading of the annual appropriation to set the 2026 budget.

City Finance Director Paullyn Carey announced that the total budget was $40,896,417. Carey also explained that this was a nine percent decrease, or $4,160,883, decrease from the 2025 budget. This was primarily attributed to construction projects completed in 2025.

The meeting began with a proclamation by Mayor Mark Robish declaring Oct. 5-14 as Fire Prevention Week in Huron.

The commission approved pay request from Top Grade Concrete LLC for $99,011 and to Sentry LLC for the Huron Salt Shed in the amount of $20,316.40.

A plat to establish a utility easement area was approved for HMMIs expansion project. A resolution to codify the street vacation approved last meeting for HMMI was also approved.

The second reading of Ordinance 2274-23-417 regarding home occupation and conditional uses was approved.

This also involved a resolution to remove the erectors license fee that was approved.

The commission approved the list of surplus items presented to set an online surplus auction with Meyer Acution Services, LLC, with a closing date of Oct. 21.

Commissioners also:
– Accepted the voluntary retirement of Mary Olson, Teen/Tween Librarian, effective Nov. 1, as well as approving posting internally and advertising for the position. Olson was commended for 18 years of service.
– Accepted the voluntary resignation of Police Officer Rebekah Htoo, effective Sept. 24, and approved advertising to fill the position.
– Approved the employment of Ka Saw Po for a Solid Waste Maintenance I position, effective Oct. 6.
s- Approved the employment of Colton Clemens for a Water-Sewer Treatment uncertified position, effective Oct. 6.
– Approved the employment of Braxton Mendel for a Water-Sewer Treatment uncertified position, effective Oct. 6.
– Approved a special on-sale alcoholic beverage license application filed by James Valley Shrine Club for a fundraiser for the fire department on Oct. 3 at The Campus Center.
– Approved a special on-sale alcoholic beverage license application filed by Broadland Creek Golf Course for two Monday night fooball events on Sept. 29 and Oct. 27 at the course.
