Spirit of Dakota art show set for Saturday

HURON As part of the Spirit of Dakota Award ceremony and banquet on Saturday at Huron Event Center, an art show will take place from 4 to 7 p.m.

Local artists Mary Lou Davis, Jim Schmidt, and the Huron Area Photography Club will have pieces on display for public viewing. Pianist Cheryl Hofer, Huron 6-12 orchestra direcotr Dr. Beth Nietzert and elementary orchestra director Esther Meador will provide music.

Jim Schmidt
Schmidt talked about his inspiration for his art:

Growing up in the country, I have many great memories. Most of the painting subjects are things of the past. They stirred my happy childhood days. With each brush stroke, I paint feeling. That lifts my spirits. In hard times, it was therapy.

My mother, Margaret Schmidt, is an art teacher. She has taught more than one hundred students. I was one of them. She taught us how to view the world through the eyes of an artist. Trees are not just green with brown bark. When you study them, you can see gray, red, yellow, and violet. In a field, I can see burnt umber and burnt sienna with other shades of green and yellow. From time to time, I still get advice from Mom on a painting that Im working on.

Usually, I work off a photograph that Ive taken. If the picture speaks to my emotions, it can be my next painting. Each painting has a story that goes with it. If you would like to hear the stories, Id be happy to share them.

She is also a member of the Huron Area Yarners that meet at the Huron Library every month.

Through the years, Mary Lou has received many blue ribbons with her stitchery talents from the South Dakota State Fair.

Huron Area Photography Club
