BOX ELDER The No. 2-ranked Huron Tigers moved to 4-0 on homecoming games, winning their fourth straight homecoming game and fifth straight game overall, defeating the Douglas Patriots 47-0 Friday on the road in Box Elder.
Huron coach Dru Strand sat a number of starters due to injury, including starting quarterback Anderson Porisch, and he was worried about a potential let-down by his team in a game against the winless Patriots. He was pleasantly surprised.
They came out tonight with the same mentality that theyve had all season, Strand said. We were a little worried due to injuries and not a great week of practice.
Huron got the ball on the opening kickoff at their own 34. Immediately, sophomore quarterback Cult Culver, making his first varsity start, found Mason Jurgens for a 17-yard gain and a first down.
That was quickly followed by a 16-yard burst up the middle by Tiger running back Landon Hulst. Hulst followed with a four-yard gain before Jurgens took an end-around 29 yards for the first score of the game with just 2:02 off the clock. The point-after kick was missed, but Huron had a 6-0 lead.
After a Douglas punt, the Tigers stuck to the ground game, running five of the six plays before Hulst took the ball off-tackle for a 14-yard touchdown scamper. Ty Kleinsasser hit the extra-point kick, and Huron was up 13-0 with 5:16 left in the first quarter.
Douglas was able to get a first down but was then forced to punt. On the punt, a Patriots player was pushed back into the kick by the Tigers rush, causing the punt to go backwards, and Huron got the ball on the Douglas 13-yard line.
After a procedure penalty moved Huron back to the 18, Culver found Jurgens for nine yards. Jurgens ran for five yards, and then Culver got the first down on a quarterback rush to the Douglas 2. After a pair of backward runs, Culver hit Cooper Bischoff on a quick out and Bischoff shook off the defender to score the touchdown on the second play of the second quarter. After the extra-point kick, Huron had a 20-0 lead just 46 seconds into the second quarter.
A Huron penalty and a run by Brodie Slancauskas got Douglas first down, but a pair of incomplete passes and a short run by Paiden Sandal led to another Douglas punt, this one pinning the Tigers back to the Huron 23.
On the first play of the drive, Culver connected with Riley Winegar for a big gainer, eating up 36 yards to the Douglas 41. Hulst had a short run and then Culver found James Shoultz Jr over the middle for a 12-yard gain and a first down. On fourth and 12, Culver connected with Bischoff for a 15-yard gain to the 11.
Oakley Anderson ran for three yards, and then a face mask on the play gave Huron the ball at the Douglas 4. From there, Anderson punched it in up the middle with 4:04 left in the first half. Kleinsassers extra point made it 27-0.
After a Douglas three-and-out, the Tigers got a pass interference to the Douglas 40. Then, Huron stuck to the ground game, leaning on senior Hulst to get to the Douglas 2, and Culver then followed his blockers for a touchdown. With the kick, Huron had a 34-0 lead as the first half buzzer rang.
After Douglas opened the second half with a punt, the Tigers got 21 yards in two runs by Hulst, then Culver went deep to Winegar for 35 yards for a touchdown. The point-after kick was missed, but the running clock began with Huron up 40-0.
Shoultz had an excellent return on the next Douglas punt, giving the Tigers opening field position on the Douglas 34. After a pair of incompletions and a fumble that the Tigers fell on, Huron went deep on fourth down and Culver connected with Jurgens for a 33-yard score. Kleinsassers extra point made it 47-0.
The running clock would allow the next drive by Douglas, their first into Huron territory in the entire game, to eat up most of the clock before turning the ball over on downs. Parker Bischoff ran hard with the second-team players on the final drive, gaining 33 yards on three carries before the clock ran to zero on the game.
Huron moves to 5-1 with six players involved in the seven touchdowns. Culver completed 9 of 15 passes for 179 yards and three scores. Hulst eclipsed 100 yards again, running for 122 yards on 13 carries with one touchdown.
Mason Jurgens had four catches for 76 yards and a score, and he also ran for 34 yards and another touchdown.
Douglas falls to 0-6. Quarterback Connor Wright was 6-for-19 passing for 32 yards. Sandal led the rushing with seven carries for 21 yards.
The Tigers will host Aberdeen Central in their final home game of the regular season, with a start time of 7:30 p.m. Coach Strand said that his team will need to be ready for a battle.
We get right back into it, where every game matters, Strand observed. Their line is probably going to be one of the biggest well see all year, but we know what we need to do.
