HURON The Huron City Commission on Monday evening approved going to bid for the food and beverage management contract with the Huron Event Center. Top Floor Events has held the contract since 2016.
The contract will be an initial three-year contract with one-year renewals after the initial contract. The new contract will begin on Jan. 1, 2026.
Proposal opening is set for 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 28. Any interested parties can pick up a bid proposal requirements sheet from the city finance office.
The meeting opened with a number of items during public forum. A resident at 10th St. SW and Lincoln Ave. discussed the new storage units being built and a privacy fence that was required as part of that construction but has yet to be built.
Commissioner Bryan Smith informed the public that West Park Ave. from US Hwy. 14 to 207th St. will be closed from Monday, Oct. 13, to Friday, Oct. 17, to through traffic as the railroad crossing will have work done.
Finally, Commissioner Rhonda Kludt mentioned National Newspaper Week and the theme of the week, Embracing local journalism for a better future. She thanked the Plainsman for local news coverage and the work to keep the community informed.
Ciy engineering technician Schaun Schnathorst presented a number of items to the commission.
The first was a change order to Menning Excavating for water main replacement in the amount of $18,104.98. This was approved.
He then presented three pay requests, which were all approved. The first was to VanderPol Dragline for Jersey Ave. drainage work for $84,866.40. Schnauthorst stated that the work is moving quickly, but before paving can be done, a permit needs to be obtained from the railroad.
The second pay request was the final payment to TLC Olson Construction for lift station improvements for $5,745. Finally, a payment of $953,850.25 was approved to Menning Construction for water main replacement.
A public hearing was held for the application for the sale of malt beverages and SD farm wine for The Tap House, LLC, doing business as The Vault, 79 Second St. SW.
The first reading of changes to ordinance 2276-23-418 was read, and the second reading was set for Oct. 20.
Staff from ELO Prof LLC of Huron presented the 2024 financial audit, reporting no notable issues in the audit. The audit was approved.
The Solid Waste Department presented a rate change due to costs of sorting mixed loads and sorting roll-off containers. The new rate of $200 for a mixed load applies to all mixed loads unless the waste is clearly separated and divided into acceptable categories. The rental rates for containers were adjusted to $600 per month for a 20 cubic yard container and $800 per month for a 30 cubic yard container. These adjusted rates were approved.
A request to repair a leak in the lazy river recirculation system at Splash Central before the end of the year was approved. The estimated cost of repair is up to $30,000.
Commissioners also:
– Accepted the voluntary resignation of Sheryl Kleinsasser, 911 telecommunicator, effective Oct. 17, and approved advertising for the position.
– Accepted the voluntary resignation of Chloe Athey, police officer, effective Nov. 1, and approved advertising to fill the position.
– Approved the employment of Dillon Corcoran for the Parks and Recreation Maintenance 1 position, effective Nov. 3, with a 1040-hour probationary period.
– Approved seasonal employee hiring for the open skating season.
– Approved a raffle permit for The Salty Sun & Sauna for a New Year, New You package with raffle tickets available from Oct. 17 to Dec. 31.
– Set Oct. 20 as the public hearing date to transfer the application for the sale of alcoholic beverages from C&K, doing business as Holiday Liquor, to Carlsons Northside Service, Inc.
The city announced that city offices will be closed on Monday, Oct. 13, in observance of Native American Day. The solid waste department announced that Mondays garbage, recycling and yard waste pick up will be picked up on Wednesday, Oct. 15.
