HURON On a busy weekend of varsity sports in Huron, Rapid City Stevens started things off on a sour note for the Tigers with a sweep Friday at Huron Arena.
The Raiders, ranked fifth in the most recent Class AA volleyball poll, secured the sweep with set scores of 25-16, 25-19 and 25-19.
Huron started off well, and after Aly Davis slammed a kill through the blockers, the Tigers held a 3-1 advantage. The Raiders quickly knotted the score and the two teams exchanged points until it was 8-8.
Thats when the visitors went on a monster run that ate up Huron coach Josh Liens first timeout, as the Raiders rattled off seven straight points. Huron would get back into the game, narrowing the gape to two at 17-15, but from that point, the Raiders closed out the game with an 8-1 run to win 25-16.
Stevens jumped out early in the second set, taking a 3-0 advantage. After a pair of Huron points, the Raiders went on another run and drew a timeout at 8-2.
The Tigers would get a point after the timeout, but then Stevens went on another prolonged run to draw Liens second timeout at 15-3.
Huron was able to play back and forth at that point until it got to 22-11, and thats when the Tigers went on their best run with Jencie Goergen serving, using a 6-0 run to get within 22-17. Huron would get a kill on an overpass by Jaelee Olsen to get within 23-19, but the Raiders rattled off the final two points for a 25-19 set win.
Huron got the first run in the third set, and a tip by Davis over the blockers hit the floor, giving the Tigers a 5-2 lead. Stevens would come back to tie the game at 6-6.
Huron would then rattle off another run, getting the score to 11-7. Stevens responded with three points to get within 11-10, but
Huron jumped back with five straight points to hold a 15-10 lead.
Stevens clawed back in bit by bit until they again tied the set score at 16-16. Lien called a timeout, and the Tigers responded with a point, but Stevens rattled off three quick points to draw Liens final timeout of the match.
The Tigers would get a point out of the timeout to get within one, but thats when the Raiders took over to close things out, rattling off a 6-1 run to close out the set, 25-19, and earn a sweep.
The Raiders move to 21-3.
Huron falls to 5-10. The Tigers return to action Saturday against Rapid City Central at 12:30 p.m. at Huron Arena.
