County discusses parking lot plans

HURON The Beadle County Commission discussed potential parking lot reconfigurations and construction during Tuesday mornings meeting.
Highway supervisor Jason Fritzsche presented two proposed options for the commission to consider, explaining that each option would add a similar number of additional parking spots. The commissioners asked whether streetside parking similar to the south end of the courthouse parking lot could be utilized on the east and west sides of the block. Fritzsche thought this would be feasible, but that it would potentially require a variance through the city.

After discussing the time needed to mill and re-pave the existing parking lot, the commission requested that Fritzsche get engineering proposals and potential costs for a plan that utilized streetside parking. Fritzsche explained that the work would likely begin in 2027, so there is time to get plans put together.

A group of concerned citizens then discussed the Izaak Walton gun range. The citizens, primarily neighbors to the range, expressed concerns about the noise level of the new configuration of the range after the reconstruction and remodeling of the range led to many of the previous trees that provided a level of sound barrier for neighbors.

The county explained that approval for the project went through the city as the area is zoned as residential, so the city and joint jurisdictional properties that the range sits on would have gone through city variance requests. A variance was granted in 2018 by the City of Huron for the project.

The citizen group stated their intention to bring this information to an upcoming city commission meeting.

A memorandum of understanding with Dakota State University cybersecurity was approved.

The commission also approved an adjustment to the 2026 budget due to a change in tax revenue.

The next meeting for the Beadle County Commission is Tuesday, October 28, at 9 a.m., in the commission room on the second floor of the courthouse.
