Huron earns win against Jefferson

SIOUX FALLS The Sioux Falls Jefferson Cavaliers entered Thursday night in Sioux Falls in the spot directly ahead of the Huron Tigers in seed points. The Tigers needed this win to help in SoDak 16 seeding, and they got it, winning in four by scores of 20-25, 25-21, 25-21 and 25-8.

Huron coach Joshua Lien was very pleased how his team bounced back after the first set and took control of the match.

We made big adjustments tonight – on serve, on receive, and on attack, Lien said. This was a match that we needed, and we did what we needed to do to come away with the win.

The first set began with back and forth play. The Tigers got their first lead of the set on a kill by Addyson Knight to make it 4-3.

Sienna Sabers then split two Huron blockers to start a four-point run, finished by an ace by Sabers to give the Cavaliers a 7-4 lead.

The lead remained two or three in favor of Jefferson until Huron climbed within 12-10 on a Cavalier hitting error. Thats when the Cavs rattled off a 6-1 run to build an 18-11 advantage and draw a timeout from Lien.

Chloe Carr got her first kill of the set out of the timeout, and that sparked a five-point Huron run and drew a timeout from Jefferson. Huron would end their own run by serving into the net.

After an ace from Sabers, Aly Davis ripped off two kills, Natalie Welty then got three kills in a row to give her seven on the set. Lien took another timeout with Huron down 23-18.

Davis was able to get a kill and a Cav hitting error made it 23-20, but a quick-set kill by Jefferson setter Olivia Wachal gave Jefferson set point, and a Huron hitting error gave the Cavaliers the first set, 25-20.

After leading just one point in the first set, Huron jumped out fast in the second set, using excellent serving from Jencie Goergen to open a 4-0 lead.

After a bad pass got Jefferson within 7-3, Huron quickly rattled off two points to make it 9-3 and draw the first timeout from Jefferson coach Beth Donnelly.

Huron would commit a net violation, but then Davis and Knight each powered kills through Jefferson blockers to push the lead out to 11-4. Welty found the corner on back-to-back kills and a Huron hit went long to make it 11-7.

The team swapped points until a three-point run by the Cavs made it 14-12. After a Huron hit off the antenna made it 15-14 Huron, Lien took a timeout.

The timeout seemed to energize Jefferson, who got two kills from Addison Warnke and a Huron hitting error to take the lead at 17-15 and draw a quick second timeout from Lien.

This time, it was the Tigers who came out of the timeout with some fire, getting a pair of errors from Jefferson, a kill from knight, an ace from Hylton Heinz, and then Carr emphatically slammed down a weak return from Jefferson to make it 20-17 in favor of the Tigers and draw Donnellys last timeout of the set.

Heinz picked up her third ace of the set, but a Sabers big swing and two Huron hitting errors got the home squad within 21-20.

Arian Pfitzer powered a hit through the blockers for Huron, and a pair of errors by Jefferson made it 24-21 and another service ace for Huron, this one from Knight, finished off the second set with a 25-21 Huron victory.

The two teams traded early points until Heinz stepped back to serve and rattled off a pair of aces. Sabers put down a kill to knot the score at 5-4. Warnke put down back-to-back kills to give Jefferson a 7-5 lead.

After Huron committed a net violation to make it 9-8 in favor of Jefferson, the Tigers rattled off five straight points, emphasized by two Goergen aces, drawing a timeout from Jefferson.

Huron errors fueled a Jefferson run to knot the score at 14-14, and then Sabers hit to the corner for Jefferson to give the Cavs a 15-14 lead and draw a Lien timeout.

The Cavaliers served into the net out of the break, and a Pfitzer kill and Heinz ace built the lead back to 17-15, but a quick three-point run gave Jefferson a 18-17 lead and drew Liens second timeout.

The teams traded long volleys after the timeout, but then Davis took over. The Tigers got a kill from Davis to start a run, and he would nail a second kill during the run. After a Huron service error at set point, Davis hit the ball through Cavalier blockers for a 25-21 set win and a 2-1 match lead.

The teams came out in the fourth set playing back and forth, but a pair of Knight kills and two service aces from Davis quickly gave Huron a 7-2 lead.

Huron kept the Cavs at arm length until the second Jefferson timeout at 15-6.
Huron then leaned on the hitting of Davis to dominate the rest of the way. Three aces from Goergen closed out the set and the 3-1 victory for Huron.

Huron moves to 8-10 behind a monster game from Davis, with 19 kills and a pair of service aces. Knight added 12 kills and two aces. Pfitzer added eight kills.

The strong hitting was credited to Georgen making excellent choices in her setting.

Were never going to get the same look twice from Jefferson, Lien explained. We did a good job of knowing what girl was in front of us and making adjustments.

Goergen tallied seven aces and Heinz added six as the Tigers amassed an incredible 19 service aces.

The impressive serving numbers didnt even tell the story of how the Tigers serve dominated the Cavaliers, beginning midway through the third set.

Once we found our rhythm, our serve was able to get aces or free balls over and over, Lien observed. Once we had Jefferson on their heels, there was no turning back.

Jefferson drops to 6-8. Sabers had 12 kills and two aces while Welty finished with 10 kills, all in the first two sets.

Jefferson swept the lower-level action, sweeping the JV match by scores of 31-29 and 26-24, then taking the sophomore match, 25-20, 20-25 and 15-4.

Huron hosts Pierre on Tuesday.
