Huron School Board receives ASPSD All Award

HURON Huron School Board members were presented the All Award from ASPSDs School Board recognition program during Tuesdays meeting.

I am pleased to read the following letter and present the Board of Education with the following award, said Superintendent Dr. Kraig Steinhoff.

Congratulations to your districts school board for earning an All Award for the 24-25 school year, read Steinhoff.

The ASPSDs school board recognition program is designed to recognize school boards for their dedicated service to the students in South Dakota. This is one way they look to recognize the time, effort, commitment, and leadership put forth by school board members.

Thank you for all you and your board did throughout the 24-25 school year and will continue to do moving forward, said Steinhoff.

Three items were added to the agenda, including three new hires. After the Board adopted the agenda with those changes.

Chairman Tim Van Berkum read of dates to remember which included, October 27 being the next Board of Education meeting, early release due to a District Inservice on November 5, Board of Education meeting on November 10, no school on November 11 for Veterans Day, Board of Education Meeting on November 24, early release on November 26, and no school for the holiday break November 27 and 28. There was no community input or conflict disclosures, or consideration of waivers.

The Board made a motion to approve the minutes from the previous meetings, the financial report, consideration of the bills, new hires to the district, resignations, and contracts. The new hires include Cynthia Combs, Rebecca Steele, Dian Peters, and Aliyah Howard as substitute teachers and Amyah Green and Kathy Airheart as substitutes for food service. For SPED/Para-Educators, Hay Claw and Nicki Mallon were hired at Madison, Stephanie Farmer at Buchanan, Austin Gross at the Middle School, and Kyley Pell at McKinley. Rhonda Kludt was hired as a Preschool Migrant Recruiter, Delaney Kouf as a substitute administrative assistant, and Brenda Kanau for the nutrition office. Leia Eddy, Dayna Winter, and Saw Thaws resignations were also approved.

The Huron Education Association (HEA) requested to be recognized for certified negotiations. James Stueckrath requested permission to have the Marching Band Indoor Exhibition as a fundraiser, meaning no passes will be accepted for this event.

Steinhoff congratulated Tim Hedblom, a teacher at Washington 4-5, and his wife, Ashley, on the recent birth of their daughter, Sophomore Mister Min for being named to the All-ESD boys soccer team, and to senior Ellie Puterbaugh for placing fifth in flight 3 at the State A tennis tournament. He also extended thank yous to the Nutrition Director, Amanda Riley, and all nutrition staff in observance of school lunch week on October 13-17, all of the School Board members, Tim Van Berkum, Garret Bischoff, Shelly Siemonsma, Ray Cardona, and Levi Kary in observance of Bosss Day on October 16. Steinhoff continued by thanking all transportation staff in observance of school bus safety week, October 20-24.

Van Burkem turned it over to Gracie Warren, who introduced the High School report. I have here at the stand Junior, Alexander Martin Lopez, Sophomore, Kaiden Steinhoff, and Senior, Karly Knippling, to talk about All-State Orchestra, said Warren.

Kaiden Steinhoff explained, The material we receive to audition on is of three scales, which we have to memorize.

We are given our music at the beginning of May, and we devote a lot of our summers to All-State, said Knippling.

All-state additions were on Wednesday, October 15, at the Huron Campus from 8 a.m. to noon. The concert is Saturday, November 1, at the Denny Sanford Premiere Center.

Kelly Christopherson gave an update on construction.

The construction is winding down, and most of the work on the high school has been completed, observed Christopherson.

The middle school roof replacement is still ongoing with two roofing crews on site now. They have also been drying out the wood floor that got wet over the summer in the middle school gym. After the middle school roof is completed, the High School partial roof replacement will begin with a third crew coming on site in November.

For the Superintendents report, Steinhoff reported that the South Dakota High School Activity Association Executive Director, Dr. Daniel Swartos, was asked by his Board of Directors to put together a committee to take a look at state dual wrestling.

The SDHSAA will be looking at the legitimate interest to continue holding the state duals. If that interest changes should the Board direct that the state dual championship be the wrestling team championship, and to eliminate the team placements in the individual state tournament. If interest remains, a change in how teams qualify and a discussion on date, format of event, as well as if, when, and how they implement state girls duals.

Earlier on Tuesday, the full administrative team received training from Brett Garland, the Director of the South Dakota State School Safety Program.

He trained us on he I Love U Guys Foundations programs for crisis response and post-crisis reunification, Steinhoff explained, Well extend this training to all staff in the future, we hope to never have to use the training, as Brett stated, crisis isnt a choice, response is.
