Tigers ink sweep against Pierre

HURON After a rough start to the season, the Huron Tigers continued a strong October by barely breaking a sweat to record a three-set sweep over the Pierre Governors on Tuesday at Huron Arena.

Set scores for the Tigers, now 9-10, were 25-13, 25-14 and 25-11.

The teams went back and forth to open the game, until Huron began to take control at 6-6. Jencie Goergen got a quick-set kill, Addyson Knight nailed an ace serve, and the Governors hit the ball into the net to quickly give Huron a 9-6 lead.

After a service error, Chloe Carr and Jaelee Olsen would get back-to-back kills, and Kya Tschetter would nail an ace serve to give Huron a 12-7 lead and draw a timeout by Pierre. The timeout didnt slow the Tigers, though, as they quickly rattled off three points out of the break to expand the lead to 15-7.

Huron kept Pierre at arms length from there, and a Carr kill finished off the first set with a 25-13 victory.

Pierre came out and got the first two points of the second set. Huron would use the Governors errors against them to climb back into it.

With a 7-6 lead, the Tigers took off with an Olsen kill and a Tschetter ace closing off a quick 4-0 run to push the lead out to 11-6.

The Tigers kept the Govs at that distance until the Tigers went on another run with the score 16-10. Pierres Marena Buschbom finally ended the Tigers run with Huron leading 21-11. Pierre would rattle off three more points to get within 21-14, but Huron then closed it out, with multiple substitutes making key plays for the Tigers before a Pierre hitting error gave the second set to Huron, 25-14.

For the first time on the night, Huron came out big in the third set, with Olsen the focus of the hitting attack, getting three kills in the first six points of the set as Huron sped out to a 7-0 lead. A hitting error would make it 9-3 for Huron, but then the Tigers went on another 7-0 run, and the rout was on from there.

Reserve hitter Camdyn Fuchs would get her first kill to finish out the 25-11 set win in the third set and the sweep of the match.

A diverse hitting attack powered the Tigers. Olsen had nine kills, and Pfitzer finished with seven. Aly Davis and Carr each had five kills.

Aly Davis had a pair of aces, while Goergen had three service aces.

Huron coach Josh Lien stated that he was pleased with how his team dialed in, despite the easy win.

Im proud of our kids for staying focused, Lien said. The girls did a nice job of maintaining their communication with girls getting some time who normally dont.

The Governors fall to 3-13. Buschbom led Pierre with four kills.

Huron swept the lower-level action, taking the JV match 25-13 and 25-17, and the sophomore match, 25-15, 25-17.

Huron travels to Mitchell next Tuesday.

Looking forward to three top-five teams to close out the season, Lien was asked what he hopes to see from his team to finish the year.

We want to be efficient, he remarked. We want to make sure that if were not going to get the big hit, were not going to be the one making an error.
