The Beadle Bops 4H Club recently participated in a Crunch Off event. The South Dakota Crunch Off is an annual statewide event celebrating Farm to School efforts, local agriculture, and promoting local producers. The event is also part of a multi-state competition to achieve the most per capita crunches into local produce, nuts, popcorn, and meat. Last year they recorded over 6,500 crunches and are hoping to surpass that this year.
Eleven aspiring taste-testers sampled a variety of fruits, herbs and vegetables which were grown in members gardens including apples, eggplant, red cabbage, cherry tomatoes, yellow pear tomatoes, butternut squash, mint, kale and rhubarb. Some of the comments overheard were Yum, Can we have seconds?, Yuck, Gross Not a fan, and Do you have sugar? Whatever the reactions, it was an entertaining event as well as a fun learning experience.
