Character Counts Week led by teen teacher at Iroquois

IROQUOIS Character Counts Week was a big success at Iroquois School, thanks to the leadership and creativity of third year Teen Teacher, Madi Burma. Throughout the week, Madi organized and led a variety of activities to promote the six pillars of character trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.

Madi and the elementary student council delivered morning announcements focused on the pillars of character and encouraged students to demonstrate positive character throughout the day. There were color dress-up days and Madi gave presentations to the Kindergarten through 3rd grade classrooms, helping younger students understand what it means to make good choices and show kindness.

One of the weeks highlights was an interactive Character Counts board that Madi created. The board displayed each of the six pillars, and students were invited to write down the names of classmates they had caught demonstrating those traits. By the end of the week, the board contained names and positive notes recognizing students for their acts of character.

To further encourage kindness, Madi placed Secret Mission slips with kindness challenges in the desks of 3rd through 5th graders and distributed Caught Being Good slips for teachers to hand out to students showing outstanding character. Where they could then turn in for a prize. She also visited the preschool classroom to read a story about caring and friendship.

Through her leadership and thoughtful planning, Madi helped make Character Counts Week a memorable and meaningful experience for the entire school communityreminding everyone that good character always counts.
